Intake Manifold Porting Show ‘n Tell

Post by ChopperScott »

Not to burden another thread, I thought that one dedicated to intake manifold porting, port matching, and gasket matching was in order. Tips and tricks are most welcome. Photos and details are encouraged…

I’ll start. This is a Weiand 7546. It once belonged to my late brother for one of his many unfinished projects, no condolences necessary.
It’s a classic outdated single plane. Quite honestly, at first glance, I thought it was time for recycling. Instead, I threw it in my bench and started grinding…

Currently on the bench is the Weiand Team G 7531 for full plenum port, and gasket match with a Fel-Pro 1206..

Along with the eye candy could the porting guys put up before and after performance data of the handy work if it’s available?

I agree with the above comment and would like to ask also for before and after wet flow improvements and or changes in EGR temps across all the cylinders.

So far this string of post is more show then tell!

When you have to make gaskets and be dead on, this is how I do it..

Let’s speak of tools. What’s on your bench?

•die grinders/drill with speed control
•assortment of burr bits, long and short
•assortment of sandpaper cartridge rolls 80-120 grit with long and short bits
•masking or duct tape to protect machined surfaces
•lighting/flashlight
•machinist dye (or Sharpie marker)
•sharp scribe
•gaskets for matching
•large clamps or vice grips

Having an assembled engine is a bonus. Drilling and pinning to match mating surfaces ensures a proper fit after assembly. I always admire your work Chad.

When gasket matching with just an intake on hand, I’ll size the port smaller than the gasket.

Should be a good thread. And timely too!
What's your method for port matching overall? That is: intake to gasket to cylinder head. Do you use the gsket as a template and scribe the outline to each mating surface? I've seen that as well as the masking tape method with reference lines on one surface transferred to the other.

You can match the shape, but that doesn't mean the shape is completely blended.

I remember thinking that blending the manifold into the head is important and something that cant be done, without working the parts together. Ill use an flapper wheels or ("hymnal books" as they say in Finland) to blend everything, because the tool is like made for it. Bearing in mind that the surface can be machined after the shape is blended, and at least i cant do any serious blending with a carbide burr, except dig the shape of it in one place.. :-?

I dont know makes me want to cut off all the V8 manifolds, or maybe i just need a bigger bur  Anyway just my 2 cents,

I don't touch the heads, but Chad's drill and pin method is the way go.

I'll use the gasket as a template and scribe the outline. I'll match the shape and undersize it no less than 1/16" to allow for gasket movement during installation, and to ensure it's no larger than the head port.

I like the pin idea but I have never done it.
Hard to see in photo but I dykem and scribe intake port on head and intake. I also scribe a centreline on head and intake to line back up each time.
It is best to have engine mocked up before port matching etc.
I put 20 hrs into this Vic jnr intake.
This is start of rough in as per photo.
I get the port match correct and work back from there.
