Stock Ford valve jobs

Post by mag2555 »

What’s your folks thoughts on the stock Ford valve jobs as seen here in this 385 engine series E8TE 460 head.

Is the lip / ridge there below the main seat to help deal with cleaning up wet flow problems, or just to keep the cost down in producing a valve job?

Where the Ford engineers doing wet flow testing back in the early 70s?

Did it have to do with induction hardening the seats?

I often wondered that myself. Some of the older small block heads have it too. Cleveland 2 and 4v come to mind. It's only on the intake side, so it probably wasn't about induction hardening. Could be about low rpm cruise economy. I don't think they wet flow tested how we think of it today, but I am sure they were aware of that stuff, and that's what they came up with maybe. Maybe it helps long term valve sealing, the seat will comform easier if it isn't cut very well. Not sure
