Cam lobe condition.

Post by Machtuck »

I have a very mild Crane hyd flat tappet cam with about 15,000 miles on it. I’m refreshing the bottom end of this 454 and upon cam inspection, noticed that the cast metal is beginning to show on 4 of the lobes. Is this normal wear? I would like to reuse this cam. The lifters on said lobes look great and have crowns. I didn’t
measure the lobes nor did i check for taper. I guess what I’m asking is, is it normal to have the porous metal beginning to show on the lobe? I will attach a photo. Thanks in advance for your input.

OR, Perhaps, one or some or all MAY be suitable for regrind/resurfacing.

Wear pattern right down the center.

Of course........ that’s not how it should be.

With quality of HFT lifter's being a question mark these days and if all your lifter's have a crown still visible with a machinist square and a bright light , sending them for a regrind might be a good idea. I kept the lifter's from my 84 Corvette, with the hard end cap because they are perfect with 80k , cam worn .010" -.015", going to send out for grind. At least I know they'll be good for a rebuild.

Is there a possibility the valve off that lobe has been lofting?

What actually causes to nose of flat tappets to wear like that early in their life?
Is it oil quality or lubrication break down
Or spring pressure related
