We developed the tool steel cam and DLC coated lifter deal in 2000. It was a true game changer in the cup world compared to the stelite overlay/chilled iron lifter we used for years. Virtually eliminated cam and lifter problems. The cam cores alone are 3k.
Yes, and like many other NASCAR innovations, it trickled down to the lower classes of circle track racing.
We had good luck, running the DLC coated lifters against different types of steel cams. The most economical. was induction hardened 1050 steel(about $750 + $1,500 for the lifters). It didn't take long for local tracks to change their rules, and make it illegal to run Steel cams in the flat tappet classes. That's when we tried using the DLC coated lifters on cast cams, but could never get them to last a whole season. I wanted to try putting in a cam tunnel, and flooding it with oil, but not to many weekend racers are going to want to do that.
