A game changer in the flat tappet world ?
I just recently saw this new product from Comp Cams. It’s apparently their standard old High Energy flat tappet lifter with a DLC coated foot which they say will improve wear characteristics greatly and even claim this coating will virtually eliminate the need for a traditional camshaft & lifter break in. A bald statement if you ask me! And the price for a V8 Chevrolet set 812d-16 is 119.95$ vs the regular uncoated High Energy lifter 812–16 costs 105.95$

Re: A game changer in the flat tappet world ?
At almost 1900 dollars per set I'm not sure how much of a game changer they will be
Re: A game changer in the flat tappet world ?
Might not be that much as the p/n ends in 16 which to me looks like a set of 16 lifters. Tried to look it up on Comps site but nothing yet, too new I suspect.jcisworthy wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 10:10 am At almost 1900 dollars per set I'm not sure how much of a game changer they will be
Re: A game changer in the flat tappet world ?
The retail price is 119.95$ on Comp Cams website. Not 1900$ that might be for a tool steel DLC coated lifters.

My question is why has this not been done a long time ago? What cam are they run on?

If you look it doesn't say "set" while all of the others lifters I see with a -16 do. So the question is $119.95 for 1 lifter or a set of 16 lifters?Monza355 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 10:41 am The retail price is 119.95$ on Comp Cams website. Good point Stan! However the -16 in the part number should indicate the quantity of the lifters like they do on all of their parts.
Re: A game changer in the flat tappet world ?
Even tho the price was w/e, Still cost is a valid point. Seen plenty of $$$ lifters and thought might as well go roller unless your required to run flat-tappet.jcisworthy wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 10:10 am At almost 1900 dollars per set I'm not sure how much of a game changer they will be

Also DV has talked a few times bout a special heat treat or coated lifters he tested that some guy was working on who passed away. My point is that he also said it showed zero wear after some use. So if the case was that they are highly reusable or infinity reusable, then well it might be worth considering, since then flat-tappet cams would have the same reusable/swap appeal as a roller cam.

DLC coated lifters do not hold up well against cast iron cams.
We tried that, decades ago.
It does hold up against steel cams, but there's no way in hell that they can sell a set of DLC coated lifters, for $120. No matter what material the lifters are made of, they have to be micro polished, before they can apply the DLC coating, and that ain't cheap.

Re: A game changer in the flat tappet world ?
For very aggressive solid lifter flat tappet camshafts I use tool steel lifters ... they seem to hold-up on iron or steel camshafts.Monza355 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 10:03 am I just recently saw this new product from Comp Cams. It looks like the face is just DLC coated and not the whole lifter.

This doesn't say set either but I assure you, it's a set of 12 lifters.Stan Weiss wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 11:06 amjcisworthy wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 10:10 am At almost 1900 dollars per set I'm not sure how much of a game changer they will beIf you look it doesn't say "set" while all of the others lifters I see with a -16 do. Comp isn't going to go away from their standard part number scheme they've used forever for a single part. If it was a single lifter, it wouldn't say "-16".

Believe it or not but I ran a set of tool steel dlc lifters on a iron solid flat tappet camshaft and it never damaged the cam are the lifter. And it had 200# of seat pressure on it 450 open. And I broke it in with a set of ceramic foot lifers first, and I was shifting at 72-7500 rpm 78-8000 at the stripe.
