Mahle Piston Weight

Post by 6.50camaro »

I'm looking to buy a set of pistons for my next build project. Going thru the Mahle catalog and the pistons I want to use are listed at 496 grams. Does that include the wrist pin . I ask because a few years ago I build an engine using Wiseco ProTru pistons of the same bore, dome and comp. height spec and they were 468 grams. It is hard to believe that the modern Mahle pistons would be heavier than the old ProTru design. Icon pistons of the same spec are 433 grams. Srp pistons are listed at 453. So I am really confused at the Mahle weight listing. Dan

I just checked a set I have here for a balance job and it appears to be the piston weight only. Catalog says 447 and I have 439 plus 117 for the pin. So even the piston weight is not exactly the same.

Thanks Bill
If that is the case, then it appears the Mahles are real "slugs" compared to other pistons of the same dimensional specs. Dan

Bil ,
Since you have some Mahle pistons right there balancing.. What is the difference in ring set weight, going from 1/16,1/16.3/16 to the 1mm,1mm 2mm ring pack.
thank you for your time .Dan

Dan,
This is for 4.125" bore

1/16 1/16 3/16 ring set is 50 grams (Speed Pro)
1mm 1mm 2mm set is 23 grams (Mahle)

So less than half the weight.
