Re: Hot Honing
If hot honing works worse, the logical thing to try is going even colder. I haven't messed with it, not sure how the oil world work....
But I have tried quite a bit of cold machining, works great on aluminum.
Keeps building up on the tool edge?... Can't get a even surface finish?.... Freeze it! I'm not joking,

That is a very interesting point of view. Solid logic.modok wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 1:02 am If hot honing works worse, the logical thing to try is going even colder. I haven't messed with it, not sure how the oil world work....

How cold do you go?modok wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 1:02 am If hot honing works worse, the logical thing to try is going even colder. I haven't messed with it, not sure how the oil world work....

Chilled coolant? Compressed air? Liquid nitrogen?
Re: Hot Honing
Oh.. probably 20F,
due to my home shop being in a small outbuilding it just naturally occurs if I don't heat it.

Re: Hot Honing
Chilled coolant could be easily done; it would help keep the workpiece at a near constant temperature.
But honing temperature does not matter as much as the temperature at which the work piece is measured.
Re: Hot Honing
200° maybe a bit hot so I do it at 350°F
Pain in the ass, but works for me.
Oven heat with plate, hone, cool, measure.
Chasing OOR and taper without over shooting size is the biggest PITA.

Re: Hot Honing
My assumption is that developments in modern thin rings and coatings and coatings has made this much less of a factor... bore finish and excellent ring land in piston along with modern ring package is where it's at.
Re: Hot Honing
Did you mean 150°?

Re: Hot Honing
Hot honing has its place and I believe there is a bit of a skill that is developed from actual experience.
One of the guys that has perfected the hot honing technique is Pro Stock engine builder Nick Ferri.
The last time I was at his shop, he had a large number of not only Pro Stock engine blocks from other racing teams for hot honing, but also Harley Davidson Pro Stock cylinder cases and other Comp Eliminator engine blocks. My personal experience with his hot honing is that the engine sealed faster and all the exhaust ports were drier and cleaner.

Nope-350F
B+S race engines can run that hot on the bore.
Ring seal and overall engine friction are the 2 low hanging fruit.
