Cam Selection/Cylinder Filling

Assuming you (1) know how to quantify the signal created by the piston as it decends the bore from TDC and (2) know head flow at varying lifts, how do you best correlate these sets of data with the object of determining whether camshaft selection has been optimized? If you are attempting to develop a simple model of cylinder filling, what assumptions do you make with regards to overlap and inertial filling? Or is such a model beyond the basic scope outlined?
