Restoring Z28 rims?

I have an old set of Z28 camaro 5 spoke steel rims. They need to be sand blasted inside and out. After this is done I want to spray 2 coats of primer sealer on the outside. Is it safe to do this on the inside of the rim that the tire covers? Or is that some how dangerous? I would not mount the tires back on for at least a week. They fit good under my nova with slicks.

I have seen plenty of steel wheels that are painted black in that area. I cant imagine primer hurting anything but I would probably actually put a good coat of quality black paint on them instead. They grey for the spokes is available from several sources if you want to keep the original look.

I've painted a lot of rally wheels and never once had a issue like that.

I've been looking for a set of those wheels for my 69 El Camino, they came from the factory on the 71-72 el camino I think. Cant go wrong with the factory steel wheels, they usually ride smooth as silk and balance up real nice..

I prefer paint, it shows the grain of the steel.

My sand blaster tank is a cheapo and it would take to long. There is a guy down the road from me that has a serious blaster. Might check out.

I wanted to try a high pressure washer and then wet sand them. The trouble with sand blasting is the sand gets caught in the grooves of the wheels and nothing can get it out..
