What do people like for checking ring and pinion pattern ?

A thin coat of bluing is too faint for my taste.

Maybe time to but some of the "red lead" referred to in those old shop manuals.

I use GM Gear Marking Compound. It is yellow and shows up real well. Part number 1052351 It works great on the tips of valves too for rocker geometry.

You can get it on Amazon also or your local GM dealer.

Obviously don't use red lead any longer. Technicians used to stain/paint porcelain with fine brushes (one such stain was red lead). A bad habit was when they licked or wetted the hairs to create a fine point. Doubtless this was done with radium as well. Needless to say, that was not conducive to a long life.

"minium" is still available.

But I like the thought of the GM product better.

Maybe I better have a peek at the ingredients list and MSDS before I use it on hot dogs
