Rear drum brakes for an 8.8 Ford

Post by Ricer 231 »

Ok... have an 8.8 Rear end with drum brakes. All stock shoes and wheel cylinders. Any better shoes for drag racing ?? Bigger wheel cylinders ? Any other ideas ? Brakes won't hold the car once ya try an bring it up on boost. 3350# car. Lucky if I can come out at zero boost. Need to come out a lot harder !!

Welcome to the speed talk forum or at least your first post here!

Any reason you can't use a trans brake?

Is this a 5 lug set up? If so go get brakes off of an Aerostar minivan. They are a wider brake shoe, a 2.5" shoe vs 2" and a larger diameter drum. You will need the backing plates and the drums, it is heavier but will stop a lot better.

Raybestoes make some severe duty shoes . Try them from NAPA.

If ya dont need the ebrake ,weld on the stock car caliper brackets and use the large GM front calipers .

It's a 5 lug. I was thinking about better brake material . Main thing is trying to hold the car coming up on boost . Easy on the street BUT a hell no on the track. Car has a 200R4. Has one of the brakes that ya put it in 1st gear then shift to 2nd to release it. I'd rather get the car to hold it. Keep info coming 8)

One old trick with duo-servo brakes is to buy two sets of shoes and use the bigger secondary shoes in both primary and secondary spots.

Does it still have a proportioning valve? You could remove the factory one and install an adjustable valve to allow a bit more pressure to the rears.
