69 Camaro BB frame stands

Post by 69427 »

Our BB 69 Camaro has a Smith Racecraft rack and pinion, and I would like to center the BB in the frame rails to get better drive shaft angles. I do not want to go with motor and mid plates for various reasons. Turbo 400 transmission and Lemons Headers for the rack.

Right now, we have stands 3950114 pass and 3950113 drivers with Moroso 62510 motor mounts. These do the offset thing to the passenger side.

I do have the original sb stands 3945507 and 3945508. and a spare set of 62500 Moroso motor mounts.

Exhausted, Calvin I believe used to make some, but I can't find any information.

So, does anyone know of a set up that will bolt in and center this in the frame rails? Factory or aftermarket. I have searched and searched but can't find anything.

Thanks for your time
Tom

The engine sits offset to the passenger side by about 1 inch on these GM cars because the rear axle diff pinion centerline is also offset about the same to the passenger side... The diff is not in the exact center of the axle.
Most all GM cars are like this Camaro Chevelle etc.
Why do you want to move the engine in the chassis?

Might mean, is none.

So your diff does have a centered pinion ?

Yes, pinion centered. 9 inch with 4 link.

You need to correct the 9" Ford rear not the engine / trans. R/L position.

It is more important that both the engine / trans and rear axle be square in the car relative to each other so that the driveshaft U joints operate "in phase".
The trans shaft centerline and rear axle pinion centrelines must be aligned square but can operate fine if on slightly different planes. horizontal and vertical as long as the combined U joint operating angles are within reason and are IN PHASE with each other.

Pinion angle matters. Pinion angle when loaded under acceleration matters more.
On these cars the whole stub frame (front sub frame) can be twisted out of square relative to the body and the rear axle.. Luckily GM made the rubber body/stub frame body mounts adjustable - shimable in X-Y-Z planes to get it right..

Best look at this VS getting all worked up about moving the engine on the frame.
This stuff matters much more.

on all these GM F body cars with bolt in Stub Frame:
....
A lot of people overlook getting the front stub frame adjusted TRUE square in the car and relative to the rear axle BEFORE welding in Drag Race car Frame Connectors. This is critical to getting the driveshaft U joints dynamicily IN PHASE when its spinning.

This car was built on a chassis jig front to back. It is square, parallel, plumb, and level. 12-point cage with x bracing, certified to 8.50.

Thanks for your help.

The small block frame stands center the engine. The big block stands offset it to clear the gear box

This is true, as I have used SB and BB stands on my 1st gen F-car and without the BBC ones header clearance was a biotch.

Both the sbc and bbc frame mounts cause the engine C/l to be offset to the passenger side.
The rear axle pinion C/L is also offset the same amount to the passenger side too.

The sbc and BBC frame mounts are a different height.
The 68 and prior and the 69 and up fram mounts are different width and take different width motor mounts.
The transmission crossmember mount hole is the same offset of center position right to left on both engine options .

The difference is in the height of the sbc/BBC frame mounts and the for/ aft position of the trans crossmember acording to which oem transmission is used.
I have seen 68-72 BBC Nova cars with the engine positioned further forward on some OEM BBC Nova cars.
Some OEM BBC 67-69 Camaros may be odd ball like this too.
All the 70 up Camaros and 68-upChevelles also offset the engine toward the passenger side too.
No idea on Impala or truck chassis.
Just look at where the axle pinion centerline position is under the car Right/Left. If its offset , the engine/ trans is too. So the engine/ trans and rear axle pinion centerlines are aligned
R to L.

If you do move the engine centerline to the center of the car you will likely need a custom built exhaust header for the drivers side. The drivers side valve cover will hit the P/B booster on BBC cars too. Thats why the drivers side BBC valve cover is dented in at the back

You'd want to check for proper stub frame mount to body
alignment under the car.. Watch cars that were in a collision... For and aft shift side to side shift. , diamond condition shift or diamond bent stub frame.
There is minor adjustment range on the factory body mounts to move the stub frame around a bit . ↑↓. ←→ ♦
Collision repaired cars can be all over the place.

A small up down and right left offset of the engine trans to re axle pinion centerlines is acceptable as long as the driveshaft U joints angles are "in phase" 180° combined angles. If the engine/ trans is crooked or is tilted wrong in the body the driveshaft will likely vibrate/whip end to end and eat U joints. As the U joint running angles are out of Phase.
The faster the driveshaft speed. the more critical.
