Shaving/buffing tyres for endurance racing?

Post by BLSTIC »

So I'm looking into a "budget" endurance racing class that has a points per modification system, with street tyres worth zero points, premium sports tyres worth some, and racing compound tyres worth nearly half the points allowance. This is determined by treadwear rating. If I run R compound tyres I won't have enough points to run both good suspension and upgraded brakes, let alone make horsepower, and I'd much rather have a balance of all four, so naturally I want to make the most of the medium range tyres.

I'm aware that shaving tyres that have tread blocks reduces temperature and slip angle. This improves performance and laps per mm of tread depth.

But does it make the tyres last as long or longer than a brand new set of street tyres would on the racetrack?

No. Shaved tires do not last as long as street tires.
How long are the races and what kind of budget do you have?
Do you have access to test on the endurance track?
My experience is that shaved tires will go around corners faster.
Suspension mods will allow the car to corner faster.
More engine power challenges the suspension and tire mods and makes you want better tires, shocks and springs.

Just watch what the winners are running. They've already solved the multi-variable regression analysis.

If you are trying to get more life from tires look in to tire preps. Track claw and one of the preps from track tac will help the life of tires. Once you go down the tire prep road it can get time consuming and pricey.

I used to buy shaved tires when I’d take my Porsche to the area track, they were def better. My experience is buy the most expensive/best tire you can run, it’s amazing what a set does to even a mediocre car, however depending on length of race they may not hold up well. Different driving styles also can be easier/harder on tires as well. Preps are also something to consider, they’re essential in the dirt oval world with some guys making crazy money concocting some that can get by the mandated testing that goes on.

Almost all (95%) of the tire grip comes from two parameters: vertical loading and slip angle.
All the rest; camber, compound, temp, pressure, etc., comprise the remaining 5%.

Vertical loading is determined by a combination of static corner weights and
dynamic weight transfer. The best result occur when the tire corner loads are
balanced, while in the corner at maximum lateral G forces.

Slip angle becomes greater as G forces increase. The trick is to to prevent
unwanted geometry changes due to roll, cornering while braking, to
maintain the desired camber footprint, with increasing G loads.

Improved handling comes from controlled slip angles, front and rear.

A great deal can be learned by use of a skid pad, data logger, IR temp
sensor, stop watch, etc.
