Digital police,fire scanner?

My mother wants a new scanner, She is almost 85 and bedridden due to a massive stroke. This was her hobby for years. The problem is this. None work anymore because there Analog. So have to buy digital. Anyone have any experience in this? I am her complete care tacker. And I PROMISED I would get her one. Please point me to the right direction. I have a $500 budget Thanks If You can help in any way
