Washer/Dryer pair replacements.

Post by pdq67 »

When we got married, we bought pair of Speed Queen units that were almost identical to their Laundromat commercial units. 1967 here!!!

Can we still buy these commercial type units or are they just modern shit nowadays that lasts like 5 and 50?? 5 minutes out the door and fifty feet from it!!

They lasted for years and years and worked great!!

We have an old pair of Kenmore, (probably 20+ years old), and I've been expecting them to finally bite the dust so just am trying to think ahead.

Top loader washer and front door dryer, both king-size here, nothing special at all.

The last time, (years ago), we had a repairman come out and he said to keep repairing the two because the new ones didn't last for shit!!

Commercial units with manual controls are available from Speed Queen and others. You can get them from big stores like Lowes or local appliance stores...A commercial washer is about $900...Due to the Covid, you may have to order and wait because of reduced factory production.
We bought a new Maytag washer about 5 years ago. It has all the modern digital controls, water saving features etc. No problems and it does the job. Previously we has old stuff bought used....I would have fix them occassionally.

Does Speed Queen still make what I am going to call a, "lost motion", agitator drive like the one we bought back in the '60's?

It imho was bullet-proof!!

Is it an electric or gas dryer. Most if not all new digital controlled electric dryers require a 4 prong outlet not 3 like the old . If you have to hire an electrician he will have to run a new feed from the panel box thats 4 wire . The new dryers because of the electronics needs a dedicated neutral line not just 2 hots and a ground like the old 240 volt stuff . Dan

Advice we got from an appliance repair person was to KEEP the old stuff, that has NO electronics.
We bought a HE dryer and washer -- both were dead in a few years. Thank goodness we purchased a maintenance agreement.

We then bought two used commercial units. A new belt and dryer element have been needed, that's it.
