Why are die grinders called die grinders?

Post by ELS »

I started thinking about it and it seemed like the name 'die grinder' didn't make sense since there's no die involved, or maybe die was meant as in stopped living, in which case I can see why

If that was the case they'd be more likely to be called 'carpal tunnel' or 'COPD' grinders etc ...... ?

The obvious prosaic answer is origination in 'die sinking' ....... creation of dies or moulds by 'sinking' an impression into them

More commonly today this is mostly CNC, but dies are usually still 'polished out' by hand, using a variety of bespoke bits of chopped up stiff emery belting mounted in a die grinder and go at it

My die grinders always die a painful death. Recently I found Lowe's was closing out their 24v Cobalt 3 speed die grinders for $39 WOW, so I bought 4 of them. They all work pretty good so far.

Probably goes back to the first time somebody bent over a 6 inch burr and the grinder tried to kill him. That's my theory anyway.
