So far I've found multiple sources that talk bout it being just like I said. For example if you were to thread a cadmium plated bolt into a Ti block, the cadmium plating would leech into the Ti causing it to become brittle https://meridian.allenpress.com/corrosi ... m=fulltextRick! wrote: ↑Mon Mar 29, 2021 1:06 pm That’s not how hydrogen embrittlement works.
If you research titanium bolt hydrogen embrittlement, you should find a reasonable study by hynickelalloy.com. Hydrogen is “installed” during manufacturing and or electroplating processes, not from rubbing a Cad plated nut on it.

I know as much as I can learn and try to keep an open mind to anything!
If I didn't overthink stuff I wouldn't be on speedtalk!

Cool. Post the whole article/paper then.BOOT wrote: ↑Mon Mar 29, 2021 3:45 pmSo far I've found multiple sources that talk bout it being just like I said. I'd be more interested in what Cad plated Ti and intimate Cad/Ti relationship thru deformed contact represents in real life.
Why do you want to use cad plated hardware on your brand new Ti screws?
Is this another ST fishing expedition that folks muster up in order to broadcast a nugget of information they've acquired?
Shame on me for falling for this one.
Re: GRADE 2 Titanium bolt Strength
I don't want to have cadmium plating on the Ti, from what I read you want to avoid using cadmium plated stuff WITH Ti
I just found it surprising and interesting and thought that I'd share the info after I looked and found a few sources saying that. It's easy enough for me to make sure I don't buy cadmium plated hardware to use with the Ti bolts, IF what I found is possible.

Re: GRADE 2 Titanium bolt Strength
I thought real cad plating was no longer in favor, because, of toxicity concerns in plating and in use, replaced by yellow zinc, meaning, what is the real concern here, as plating Ti is mainly only for cosmetics?
Re: GRADE 2 Titanium bolt Strength
None of the Ti HARDWARE I've bought or want is plated and I don't want it plated. I've read about coated Ti retainers or keepers but none of the ones I have are as well.
If I go on McMaster Carr and look at the size nut that I'd buy for the bolt that I started this discussion about, they have it in Cadmium as one of the options. I've bought grade 8 hardware from a local place that turned out to be prob cadmium or so I was told because of how it did something funny when welded.
Obviously I could use all Ti hardware but to keep cost reduced I'd prefer a steel nut and as I mentioned earlier some other things like brackets could be plated and it's possible they could be new/old stock or cadmium plated in another country.
I'm sry I brought it up, can we move on past the plating I'm not gonna get LOL

Re: GRADE 2 Titanium bolt Strength
Not an ideal comparison but the Torque spec for a Steel grade 8 bolt is the same as the two size larger Ti grade 2 bolt

Re: GRADE 2 Titanium bolt Strength
Another interesting detail is the hex heads are friction welded on the grade 2 Ti bolts that I was looking at. Don't think I've seen that on other Ti bolts or at least it's not stated/noticeable

Re: GRADE 2 Titanium bolt Strength
I have never heard of a friction welded bolt head that makes sense, sounds rather funky to me, to be kind.

Oil and gas components, reaction and pressure vessels, tubing or piping systems, heat exchangers, liners, flue-gas desulphurization systems, and many other industrial components are common uses for Grade 2 titanium. IF you want more details information all about PDMS, MES, WMS, VMS and so on to check out the page https://www.zerodefectmanufacturing.com/blog/.
