Resistor For Cabin Fan?

Post by chimpvalet »

Hello,

'79 Lotus in restoration with upgrades to systems including HVAC, asking whether OK to run straight power to the cabin fan on maximum setting? I've got modern blower, switch and resistor block in hand, just wondering whether OK electrically to bypass resistors for max output setting. Noise issue troubles for digital gadgets if straight connected, for instance.

If the fan was designed to run without a res, ok. But if it was designed to use a res on max speed, it will likely overheat, burn out or start a fire without the res.

Thanks Geoff. The blower chosen is OEM on Saturn L300, I believe, and likely controlled by more modern solid state stuff. Hard to know what's going on with that.

Is it at all typical for cabin blowers to require resistor inline for all modes? The resistor block I've chosen has circuits ranging from sub-1 Ohm to under 3 for the highest, therefore modest effect at a higher speed.

Cheers
