NHRA SS/H 1970 AMC AMX - New 390 Engine

Post by Jeff Lee »

Have been building this new engine for over a year. Just got it in the car and running 09/01/2019. Holley Carb is only on the car as it always idles, never floods, etc. I’m in process of work on the 4300 Autolite carb which will be on the engine soon along with new fuel system.
Off to the chassis shop next week. Re-locating rear leaf springs, tubbing to the factory frame rails, notching the frame (want 12'-13” slicks), trading the Calvert bars for Smith Assassin bars, new shocks all around, Ken Keir single wheelie bar, tying the roll cage to the leaf spring mounts, building new headers and other items. After the chassis shop I have some wiring to do and that includes a V300 RacePack which I have never had.
Had custom oil pan built and grafted Edelbrock Mopar 383 Victor Intake to AMC RPM Air-Gap base. That was a LOT of work and fabrication; way more than I thought it would be!
This is my first “for real” SS engine. Previously the car was NHRA D/S stocker that went as fast as 10.55 @ 125 using the Autolite carb. At one time I dropped a “half-assed” SS engine in the car (still Stocker chassis) and went a best of 10.02 @ 133. I’m hopping to run 9.70’s with the new stuff.

Hello Jeff Lee, I truly admire your incredible work done to keep this car technically competitive, even innovative, and to show everyone else how cool an American Motors car can be.

Thanks for posting the new videos -really enjoyed watching them. -David Troxell

Just stumbled on this old thread which I completely forgot about!
MaxSoftware: that video is on my i-phone 10 XS Max.

Update: That chassis shop....well....let’s just leave it at “it didn’t work out to good”
Currently at another shop in Phoenix, AZ (Comp Chassis) since middle of January 2021. Just got off the phone with Mike Brient over there and car is on the ground after middle of the car roll-cage modifications and rear of the car with a new CM 5/8” round-tube back-half. Yea, a long way from the “lets notch the frame-rails”!
Now time to pull the engine for firewall forward bars and such. Hope to have car home by June 2021 and then install MSD SmartWire, MSD Digital Dash, V300 RacePak. Then carpet and go racing this year? I hate even putting dates on anything about this car because so far, I’m a real loser in that category!
Oh...and the new plan is SS/G @ 2,965# minimum.
Helmet about to expire so I bought a new Arai and for some reason got talked into a custom pain job on it.
Here’s a few pictures to update:

Nice looking build but is it still super stock legal with the back half, particularly the sheet metal?I haven’t looked at rule book in years but the area between the frame rails was supposed to be original height and maybe even original floor...not trying to stir trouble just maybe saving you some,in case it still reads that way....Victor Penrod
