Ford EV Truck Towing Mileage

Post by BOOT »

Well I herd that a guy with a brand new EV truck didn't make it 60 miles with his 5th wheel. Here's a vid bout towing a Model T on an aluminum open trailer

https://youtu.be/3nS0Fdayj8Y

Follow up vid Ford was not happy with him.

https://youtu.be/HZbJ7PFlnH8

Just to be fair a Brand NEW GM EV Hummer breaking with bout 250 miles on it.

For true, EV pickups are not yet ready for long distance heavy towing.

The reality is survey says less than 10% of pickups tow anything ever and only 5% of them tow to GVW. Despite their rarely being used as a truck, 20% of US buyers choose this completely unsuitable, uneconomical vehicle as their daily driver.

A Model T and alum trailer isn't exactly a big load to over triple the mileage use. So max load for that truck in the video would be closer to 5x the mileage use maybe?

Oh and one thing I don't think they covered in the video. Do charging stations have enough room for you to park with a trailer hooked up OR would you have to park your trailer & load somewhere else, then unhook to go charge???

Weight is a secondary factor in highway towing fuel consumption. Aero drag is the main thing - just adding the trailer with poor Cd and large frontal area is the killer, adding a lot of extra weight beyond the Model T won't make a lot of difference.

Yer, but if one of them is going to drive into you........you don't want to be in a Honda Civic.

The peeps on the aero mod forum know that the weight to make/build often negates most are all of the benefit from their aero designs.

Now if we're talking higher speeds and not 70 mph that the youtuber was going.

I mean Saturns & imports weighting 2000ish got great mileage partly due to their lightweight. Small truck vs Big truck???

Most people are not trucking down the road 8hrs at a time they STOP often. Things are not IDEAL IRL

War is so random, yer packin' a .45 and the other guy only has a .22, but if he shoots you in the right place, yer both still dead.

Then, the battlefield has many howitzers; the .45 doesn't do much against them. The F350/3500 dually is still a bug on the windshield of a Class 8.

Speaking of war, I've said for some time now. All you need to overthrow a government is Trucks & AK's just ask Afghanistan. EV = control!

Plus it occurred to me the other day, you can't siphon fuel from an EV vehicle like a gas vehicle. How long does a full EV charge last? I can put fuel treatment in a car with a full tank of gasoline and let it sit for a few years. I mean it'd suck to pay for the electricity n have it just go away into nothing.

As long as the temperature is constant, I've never noticed any EV charge degradation over time sitting. However, some have had expensive repairs with ICE cars when today's 10% ethanol sits too long.

BTW, Ford, for the next several years, will be selling every Lightning they can make at above MSRP. Those who don't think electric trucks are real, you won't be missed.

Well if modern cars are having so much trouble with 10% then why would you trust them to not F up EV LOL

As someone who lives in a northern state, I think EV isn't a practical option for all. No single silver bullet will be the solution But that would assume those who make these absurd rules use logic or actually trust the science and we know that they don't. The only thing they trust that is green, are the dollars that line their crooked pockets.

EV is coming whether we like it or not, I've been saying it for years long before all this BS! But I knew it would be forced on people and not actually a real solution.

I'll let the foolish test it out, find all the flaws and suffer the R&D cost at the least LOL

It's been going on for 120 years, here's a dude using a 1918 electric motor in 1968 and telling us the battery technology to make it practical is a year away.

Again, you won't be missed. It's almost imposible to buy an EV today. Most of the near term production are reserved by cash deposits years out.

I've been building ICEs for sixty years now, but drive an EV when I'm not hauling greasy obsolete engine cores.
