Electric ?

Post by RAS »

First , this is all political Bullshit. Lets break it down. The avg. EV will use 30KWh / 100 miles. The Avg. vehicle drives 13,500 miles a year. There are 227 Million drivers. That's 927 Billion KWh of energy. That would consume everything we produce now plus 25% more. Keep in mind you can't throttle a Nuke plant. They will need 127 new Nuclear plants, or 3.8 million acres of solar panels, or 300,000 acres of wind mills. 27% of all pollution was generated from electricity production in 2018. Sound good ? Not even practical. Hybrid is another story. That works.

Must be something wrong with your maths. http://euanmearns.com/how-much-more-ele ... -vehicles/

There is lots of research into this. If you think it is a lot of electric energy (it is) think of how much gasolene we use - at 3 times the energy required from gasolene to do the same job as EVs.

According to some, electricity falls out of the sky for nothing...

You can't throttle a nuclear plant. It has to run at full song. So the most you can have is maybe 60% nuclear. As demand varies through out the day supply or generated electricity has to meet the demand. You bring on line gas and coal fired plants. There is some hydro and thermal generation but it's trivial. Northern states have no use for Evs. The battery is half strength at best in winter months when there is little sun shine for solar. If you live around I40 or south of there your in good shape. I think HYBRIDs are very smart. The Hydrogen electric is very promising. In any case if they don't start building dozens of new NUKE plants this is just another political bust.

The US produced 4 trillion kWh of electricity in 2020 which means we would need ~23% more capacity than we have now. Maybe I’m misreading your statement, but it reads as though we would need a 125% increase over our current capacity.

Daimler group sees a future for hydrogen in long haul trucking. Their analysis shows battery-electric is a better solution for delivery trucks and of course for cars.

Or maybe they just pulled that idea out of their arse?
