1000 Hp 632 for street - possible or no?

Post by David Vizard »

I get a call from ex ProStock engine builder Terry Walters. He has been contacted by a guy who is looking for a 1000 hp single carb 632 BB Chevy.
Well Terry gets the job and I get to modify the heads and intake. the client already has heads - a set of 335 cc AFR's. Now while these heads are really nice pieces they are not what we want for a 632 inch BBC.

I have started to extensively re-work the heads to make them more suitable for the job in hand but before getting too far into this I would like to hear what kind of spec's/attributes you BBC guys think I should shoot for.

i'm not a pro, but i do have a set of those exact heads that are on a 555 in untouched form. They seem to be working awesome for me and i think i'm making around 850 hp. From what i've heard, they don't like to go beyond 7000 rpm in a motor this big.

If I was a betting man, I would wager that Mr.Vizard will crack the 1000HP mark at 6500RPM....

I would sell those heads and start with an AFR 385 head. That would achieve those numbers with right cam and compression

What's the intended application? Strictly race or are we intending to drive this on the street a bit? I've gotten lazy in my old age and I'd just throw a turbo or two on it.

This is easy. Those heads can be opened up to flow 450’s in the 350’s cc range and have made over 1000 on pump gas on a 582 build thats setup for nitrous. A na spec 632 should easily make that

As bad as I hogged out those EQs (338cc), you'd think they'd be right at home on a 632 with a little more finesse and a 2.3 valve. That exhaust port is crazy-slow, though. Nitrous! :D

Then again, those AFRs are a little easier to move around.

Dave, shouldn't be a problem and honestly should be in the 1100Hp range. IT'S BEEN DONE numerous times already.

I was talking with Darin Morgan about a pumpgas 632 and the heads I was looking at. Here was his reply:

"All our 632 pump gas engine have a low lash roller with a stock core cam. We have worked on cams for the last year on these engines and have an excellent combo. 1000hp is not an issue."

Now FYI to me, he expressed his liking of the Profilier 375X heads to get me there. Foxwell/Straub have Lacrone's 582 well over 1000Hp (1028Hp @ 7000) pumpgas dragweek NITROUS motor with reworked AFR 335's.

So not only CAN it be done, it HAS been done with 335 heads on a small 582.

Keep us posted, John

OK guys- plenty of good info here.

Turns out that when I got the job of doing the heads the end goal had not been made clear. In fact I did not get all the vital details until well after I started this thread.

What I am going to do here is hopefully answer your questions about in the order they came in.

First fuel:- I had originally thought this was to be a pump gas street motor. That was in fact only half the story. E85 is a pump fuel and that is what the client meant by 'pump fuel'. Good that meant I could go with a 14.5/1 CR no problem. secondly 'street' actually meant 'street racer' so that removed another constriction.

So now we are looking at a streetable race engine so things have changed quite a bit. This build is also not going to be a full time nitrous build. The requirement is for max output on the motor with a small N2O kit of 150 hp max. Also must use 24 degree heads and a single carb intake. The best intake I have found after testing most of them is the Darren Morgan designed Sniper from Profiler.

I am going to be doing what I hope is the final valve seat design test tomorrow (17th Aug)so will post results and give dimension details. I don't often give away that kind of info but, at 76, I doubt if I will race again so what the heck -----

That is Stout!
One comment though: it looks way radical for any kind of street service, bu the CR seems curiously low for a pure race engine...
