Server times out

Post by enigma57 »

:D Hurray! I actually got on! Been trying all day.

I made a post on the forum here this morning. The remainder of the day, I received periodic messages indicating that there were posts I should respond to.

But when I attempted to log on, it timed out and no matter how many times I tried, I could not connect to Speed-Talk.
The connection has timed out

The server at www.speed-talk.com is taking too long to respond.
Its been like this for weeks now. Sometimes, I am logged on and will get bumped off. Other times, I cannot get on at all. So what's going on and when will it be fixed?

Thanks,

Harry

Has this happened before?
Anyone else has experienced this issue?

In case of an actuall server-issue causing it to go offline, an email is being sent to notify, and another email is sent when the server is back online.
Could have been a temporary issue with one of the many 'nodes' (webservers) that traffic is routed through on the net.

Regarding others...... Can't say. I can only say that its an almost daily occurrence for me. Seem to be able to get on very late at night and in the wee hours of the morning, but its hit and miss (mostly miss) during other (busier?) times of the day.

And no...... I haven't received any E-mails about it. I do receive periodic notices that someone has replied to a thread I have posted on, though. But more often than not, when I attempt to get onto Speed-Talk...... I end up with the notice on my computer that the server here is taking too long and my attempt to connect has timed out. When that happens, I can keep repeating my attempts for as long as I have patience for and it makes no difference...... Still cannot get on. Or if I was on and got booted off...... Cannot get back on. Makes no difference whether I'm logged in or not...... Same thing happens.

We have DSL internet service (18Mbps) and we use FireFox as our internet browser. FWIW, I have tried to get on Speed-Talk using Internet Explorer as an alternative, but that doesn't work, either. No issues getting on any other websites, though. Even when I cannot get on here.

Best regards,

Harry

(Only the server-admin gets an email if the server is 'down' for some reason).

Do you know how to do a 'trace route' on your PC?
In short, in the Windows command prompt you can enter "tracert www.speed-talk.com", and it will start to list all the internet-routers your request encounters during its way to the speed-talk server.

Whenever you have trouble reaching Speed-Talk.com, do the Trace Route and it will most likely time-out at one of the routers somewhere in the list shown.
This will somewhat give a clue where the issue lies.

Here's a short explanation of how to get to the Windows command prompt and start a Trace Route;

Try power resetting your router(s).

Thanks for the heads up! I'll give it a try. One question..... If I do identify the source of the problem...... My very limited understanding of computers tells me that I cannot pick and choose my servers. If that is indeed the case, what will I do to keep the Speed-Talk server from timing out? This is the only website I have that issue with.

Thanks,

Harry

The problem is, a user has hardly any control about how your internet-provider routes your traffic across the internet. It's up to the provider to choose its preferred route.
Without resorting to using a VPN, you could try and enter different DNS-servers in your network-settings, to see if that might help bypass the problem, but that seems doubtful. Use Google's DNS-servers for instance, instead of those currently provided by your internet-provider;
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

(And/or the following for ipv6-connections:)

Thanks for the info. Computers are a mystery to me, but I'll see if I can do it. Bear in mind that I'm an old fart. Still have my rotary dial phone and made a decision some years back never to get involved with 'social media' and never to own a 'smart phone'.

Do OK turning wrenches and fiddling with carburettors but wouldn't know how to use a 'smart phone' if I had one. Figure I've done OK for nearly 72 years without that stuff, so no need to complicate matters now. :wink:

Well, I gave it a try. Got off into unfamiliar territory pretty quick. Decided to leave these sorts of things to those who better understand them and stay with what I've got for the meanwhile. Wife is younger and knows more about computers than do I. She has been talking about going to a VPN and finding an E-mail provider other than Gmail so I'll wait until the dust settles on all that and see how things work out here with the server before proceeding further.

Many thanks for your help,

Harry

If you're not feeling 'at home' using computers then it can become daunting real quick, I understand.

You could try, as a simple test whenever the connection issue appears again, by going to this site;
https://hide.me/en/proxy
...and try to visit Speed-Talk.com through that site.

:-D Will do! I can do E-mail and look for car parts. Guess that's all I really need computers for when you get right down to it.

Happened to me for a while yesterday too. Probably an hour or two and then all was back to normal. Middle of the afternoon.

Bill, computers are a mystery to me. I ran all of the freebie scanners I have here. Then had my wife do a defrag and remove any unnecessary programs I don't need nor use (she knows a lot more about computers than do I).

That was a couple of weeks ago. I have only had one incident since then where I have visited Speed Talk and the server has timed out on me. 2 or 3 times it was slow as molasses, but it only timed out on me that one time.

Can't say whether what we did helped, whether something has changed for the better with the server here or whether I just got lucky. Only know that its been lots better for us the past couple of weeks. :D

Belay my last...... Bill, I got booted off the server shortly after posting to you here today and just now managed to get back on...... 6-1/2 hr. later. Tried every 5 minutes or so for a couple of hours and every 15 minutes thereafter. No go. Guess I just got lucky over the past 2 weeks.

Anyway...... Whatever the issue is with the server here...... Its still timing out. That's all I can tell you. And FWIW...... This is the only server that has ever timed out on me. And it has only done that over the past month or two. :?

Have been considering signing up for HotPass membership. Reckon I'll wait and see if the server gets straightened out before making that move. No use springing for the extra access to HotPass only areas if I can't get on the forum a great many hours of the day.

Best regards,

Harry

I have run into the same thing periodically. It's just ST. Comes and goes. Day or night.
All other web pages no problem.
Eventually it comes back.
I assumed that Mike may have changed hosts and the new guys don't have the same throughput power.
