Re: Server times out

Post by BigBlockMopar »

I am the hoster. I assisted Mike with saving Speed-Talk by moving the entire forum over and donate serverspace for the forum's new home.

I've been looking into it again and can't see any downtime in the server logs. The server itself has always been 'online'.
One thing though, every day the server is doing a total backup. This could perhaps cause some percieved downtime as the serverload is higher at that point.
Will look into setting up a remote server-uptime checktool that pings the server every minute orso to check if it's still online or not.

That makes sense, Dave. For me, pulling up the website here has become a hit and miss affair at best. Makes no difference whether I attempt to log on or not. At times, the server just times out no matter how many times I attempt to pull up the website. Can't get as far as logging on if I cannot first pull the website up. And if I am logged onto the website and/or in the midst of responding to a post when the server goes down, I cannot post and I cannot get back onto the website again for hours. Or days. Its gotten to be such a hassle that I only attempt to visit Speed Talk once a day or at times, once every several days now, whether I receive an E-mail notifying me that a thread I have subscribed to has had a response from someone or not.

Thanks for checking into the server issue, Big Block. I hope that you can resolve it.

Best regards to all,

Harry

:D Thanks, Kevin! Much appreciated. I have saved the link and will check to see what it tells me next time the server times out on me.

Best regards,

FYI, This is the first moment I could get back on here since 9:00 last night. The old server timed out thing.

This is strange.
I'm sometimes logged on 24 hours a day, for days at a time, at work.
My phone is logged on all the time.
I log on with my ipad, when I'm at home.
Not once, have I had this issue.

This seems to be hitting a very small group, but it's a major issue we need to fix.
Maybe we need to see if there's something common, between all the people having the issues?

Ive run into the same problem when trying to log on at times. Get a message to the affect the server is running at capacity. Later when trying I can get on without issue.
Don't recall this happening before the site rework. Figured there could of been a reduction of bandwidth.

BBM,
Just had it happen again to me. I am using a T-mobile wireless hot spot for my internet. I decided to try turning the Hot Spot off and back on and that fixed the issue. It has happened several times in the past also. I have not had any issues with any other sites. Cant remember if it has ever happened at home on my Comcast internet but if it does I will let you know :)

Didnt think to do a tracert before I reset the hot spot. Next time I will for sure. That might help you.

Texas -- AT&T landline -- Use FireFox, have also tried Internet Explorer as web browser when server here times out, but same result...... Still times out.

Happens when I attempt to pull up the website. Has nothing to do with whether or not I then try and log on except that at times, logging on is slower than usual. Other times, I may be logged on and in process of typing a comment and will get bounced off when I attempt to post it and then cannot get back on for a day or longer.

I always log on (or attempt to) when ready to comment and log back off when leaving the website.

FWIW, this is only website where I have had this issue and only over the past several months. Its intermittent. Hit and miss. Have not had a problem here since Kevin posted the link on 5 Nov. but that's likely just the luck of the draw. Just priour to that, had little luck logging on for better part of a week.

Hope this gives you some clues as to what the problem may be,

Harry

FWIW...... Just logged back in. Was logged in and attempting to post a new thread yesterday. Got bounced when I tried to post it. Tried several times each hour over an 8 hour period to get back on the website, but server timed out each time and have just now managed to pull up the website and post my thread in the classifieds.

Best regards,

Harry

Thanks for the update.
Sorry to hear your connection to the site is still iffy at best.

Did you think to try to visit the link Kevin posted to see if the site is really down?
