Sorry to hear your connection to the site is still iffy at best.

Did you think to try to visit the link Kevin posted to see if the site is really down?
https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/speed-talk.com
 Have been looking for 60 year old hydro-vac units the past several days and didn't think to copy link for safe keeping.

I simply wasn't thinking. Couldn't access the link Kevin posted earlier because it was here on the website and of course, I couldn't get back on the website to find it once the server timed out and booted me off. I will copy the link and keep it in a safe place for next time. ](*,)

Thanks,

The dogs will track down the problem. :)
:hello2: Sehr gut, Kevin! Vielen Dank für die Vorstellung der Hunde. Wenn alles wieder kaputt ist mit dem Computer, werde ich die Hunde loslassen, um die Lösung zu finden.

Hi Harry (and others),

You really need to print out or copy the instructions below to solve the problem. I just performed the "trace route" with my computer (which accesses the site successfully all(?) the time). If you talk to your internet provider tech service this is probably what they will ask you to do.

Good luck.

BigBlockMopar wrote: Fri Oct 11, 2019 3:50 pm (Only the server-admin gets an email if the server is 'down' for some reason).

Do you know how to do a 'trace route' on your PC?
In short, in the Windows command prompt you can enter "tracert www.speed-talk.com", and it will start to list all the internet-routers your request encounters during its way to the speed-talk server.

Whenever you have trouble reaching Speed-Talk.com, do the Trace Route and it will most likely time-out at one of the routers somewhere in the list shown.
This will somewhat give a clue where the issue lies.

Here's a short explanation of how to get to the Windows command prompt and start a Trace Route;

Thanks, Kevin. I tried that a while back and got seriously lost. Kinda high tech for old farts like me. May give it another try. ](*,)

BigBlockMopar wrote: Sun Nov 03, 2019 4:34 pm I am the hoster. I assisted Mike with saving Speed-Talk by moving the entire forum over and donate serverspace for the forum's new home.

I've been looking into it again and can't see any downtime in the server logs. The server itself has always been 'online'.
One thing though, every day the server is doing a total backup. This could perhaps cause some percieved downtime as the serverload is higher at that point.
Will look into setting up a remote server-uptime checktool that pings the server every minute orso to check if it's still online or not.
It happens to me all the time, it can be minutes to half a day, I can access every other site I frequent just not ST from my home computer but if I tether my cell phone to my computer as opposed to using my home provider I can access it just fine but then that just eats up data so I usually just wait.

Anyone else has experienced this issue?
Just happened to me again. Had to turn off my T-Mobile hot spot and turn it back on to get it to work on this site. No problems with any other sites. I did get a tracert this time :) Picture attached.

Happened again this morning. 6:50 AM est All other sites were working fine. I had to reset my hot spot to get speed talk to come up. Here is another tracert. Not sure if there is anything I can do on this end to help it ? Or just live with it. At least I know what to do to fix it when it happens :)

Bill,
When you say hotspot I assume you are talking about some kind of cell phone internet access.
You don't by chance use Verizon do you?

Dave,
No, T-Mobile it has been great for everything else. Comcast recently ran lines to our building so that might be another option but I dont know if I use the internet enough to justify their charge compared to the Hotspot.

Thanks Bill for the 2nd traceroute.
I've opened a ticket at the server-company that hosts my VPS to see if they can find out anything about this in their network.

For whatever difference it makes, EVERY time I have trouble connecting, it's late-evening or "I'm up way too late at night". Never a problem during the day.
