the old school cams rev like crazy
and are easy on the valve springs
and can even make some hp but not what a modern grind will do with modern springs and especially modern heads
where modern cams really pick up is midrange with their much larger area under the curve (at the same seat timing) or even the same .050 timing (OR SHORTER- they can still have more area)
The old school cams had to open earlier which hurts overlap and low end and they had to close later which hurts part throttle as there is not enough velocity to prevent reversion as the intake is getting close to closing
of course this is a choice you have to make with a modern cam too
all top end you can close the valve a little later to catch that last little bit of inertia mass
or you can close it a little earlier so it's more driveable stop and go
all trade offs
no free lunch
Be careful what you wish for- you might get it

Those heads unmodified will choke it at 7k
Will still pull to 7500, but 8k might be asking a bit much

I had a pair of old '55, 265 heads on my old junk301. They had the way early rect. water hole in them if not the round one, I forget??

They had 1.72"/1.50" valves in them that I ground hell out of.

My old junk301 with no more than a junkyard salvaged -097 cam would hit 7,500 rpm with new points in it.

A week later and only 7,000 rpm..

I coffee canned the lifters and still put her together and she ran fine. My early wore out 327 SJ block probably had .008" to .010" on its cylinders.. Dingle-berry honed her and went!

I read through this whole thread and one thing became abundantly clear, your building this engine for your enjoyment rather than truly going fast. Why not save some bucks and just use the cam you have. You'll never see a difference just stompin on her and rippin through the gears.
The more I know,the harder it gets.

I've used lots of different cams from lots of cam grinders over 60 years in sbc, lots of dyno time and worked with lots of flow bench time
in my 350 pickup the custom cam (ft hyd) was well worth it
If I have to rebuild I go to a Vortex type head and a HR- but still custom
most of the difference is when you go to pass someone...I get up to "way too fast" way too quick

I just e-mailed a guy about, hopefully, a NOS Duntov -097 cam> so I will see what he has to say?

I want an OEM Duntov -097 cam IF I can buy such and animal nowadays??
