The single valve version concept uses a slide rather than a valve
but needs plasma sprayed low friction coating along with secondary mazda
rotary apex seal springs. Also is correctly a side valve setup but sits higher
up in the head and allows a more direct 45 degree inlet and 30 degree exhaust port.
Its for another thread though as its for a 2 stroke e85 weed wacker setup.

Whenever someone says an engine is "torquey" my brain says "no power".

How about putting the valve seats in the head along with both ports so the valves operate in reverse??

The valves would still be in the block so it would still be a flathead... Only the seats and ports would be in the head...

Seats in the head and valves in the block. How exactly does that work???

The cam is made so that the valves seat in the seats in the head!!

There will however be valve stems in the way in the combustion chamber when the valves operate.

I personally like the I want to say the, Oakland, flat head V-8 that had the valves in the block horizontally located. The cam in the engine v operated the valves by using vertical rockers

I am pretty sure the H.A.M.B. has a really long thread on it with a section view picture of this engine AND I am right in the middle of the thread.

Stan,

It may not be possible to do what I am talking about which is just design the cam so that at what is open on a standard cam will be closed with the seats in the head!

Maybe can be done using a Ducati type engineered, "Desmodromic", valve system's positive valve retention, who knows???

I suppose you mean this kind of flathead engine.

That's it Nikolas!!

I think Pontiac ended up with it around '32 or so, but canned it and kept their straight engines.

Please check me here??

There is also a nice view to the valve train.

The horizontal valve design had a brief vogue in the late 1920s, but died out in the 1930s. The Auburn 12 became the American-LaFrance V12.

I'd like to see drawings of Cadillac V-16 flathead engine. Anyone?

How about a Roller cam, 452 CI, OHV Cad V16?
