Re: Poppets, sleeves & other stuff
Here is a great article about my favorite aero engined race car, the “Hisso Special”. Powered by half a Hispano-Suisa liquid cooled aero V8 engine. Pure sex!

Least we forget the Ford, all aluminum, DOHC, gas engine, GAA (1100 CI V8) & GAC (1650 CI V12), both 60 deg V's and both used in tanks (M4 & T29). B&S were 5.4x6.
As the story goes, the engine was first designed as a V12, aircraft engine for the Navy but was canceled. The Navy decided it only wanted radial engines. GM had the rights to all other V12 applications, with their Allison. I suspect there were politics in that.
It looks like a very good design and I love the cam drive. It was a very reliable engine, too.
Both were governed to 2600 rpm. 500 HP for the V8 and 750, for the V12 but, dynoed to 525 & 770 @ 2800.

frnkeore
The GAA was an advanced engine for it's time ...... I guess politics, an overcrowded marketplace and already proven designs killed it for aero
Entirely co-incidental it shared the B&S with the Merlin ...... lol
CC was very reminiscent of the Allison

Engineers dream, maintenance nightmare ...... although it did eventually evolve into a very effective engine, despite continually trying to incapacitate the pilot
