Hydraulic roller cam equivalent to Crane hyd FT 274H06

Post by mortorq »

Since the renowned Harold Brookshire has passed, does anyone have any thoughts on what the old Crane hyd FT 274H06(or Elgin 1785) 218’/218’ @ .050”, .450”/.450”, tight 106’ LSA cam would be EQUIVALENT to when changing over to a hydraulic roller cam & valvetrain INSTEAD of a hyd flat tappet?

Street use TBI 305 converted to carb. Have a low restriction exhaust system for those weak Vortec exh ports, AND I’m not going to RPM the thing.....

Would this David Vizard spec’d single pattern hyd roller Lunati Voodoo 211/211 @ .050”, 262/262, .515”/.515”, on 106’ LSA be equivalent to the above old Crane hyd FT 274H06?

All the Crane 274H06 cam users reviews & videos in low comp smogger 305’s & 350’s say that cam works well due to the short duration @ .050” even though it has a tight LSA.

‘88 IROC vert 5 spd, 3:08, otherwise stock L03 short block, #059 Vortec heads prepped for lift & springs, list #6210 Holley, 2055 Hooker headers, 3” exhaust.
Thanks

Install the 059 heads using a felpro 1094 shim head gasket to max the net cr on that 305.

I can't remember ever seeing a "car" block that wasn't fully machined for all the parts no matter what cam/RPO it got, "truck" blocks could get either. The non-machined blocks in trucks were fairly rare.

Yes, it does have the factory equipped hyd roller “peanut cam” with 179’/194’ @ .050”.

With this cam: recurve and stop limit your distributor for a 10 deg mechanical advance curve. (stock is 20 to 24 deg..
timi g will be 24-26 base initial...... 34-36 max at 2800-3200 rpm..
add a 12-15 deg vacuum advance curve. as well.

What's your reasoning for moving to a roller profile?

I would say it would not be equivalent to the crane cam. It however would be a good "do no harm cam" for a 305 as far as lowend power. It would be a good step up from a stock very weak 305 cam. I would highly recommend you check piston to valve clearance with clay with it's 106 LSA and that amount of lift. That kind of LSA does start eating up PTVC on overlap even on smaller cams.

Tenxal...
I wouldn’t be moving to a roller cam, it has the factory 1988 roller cam, roller lifters, & spider bracket in there now in the 305.

No cam expert but Howards 180305-8 & Elgin E1135P are a tad larger single pattern cams. idk how they'd do on a 305 tho but I was told they sound sim to the Elgin E-1785-P

Vid I made bout the two roller cams

I know as much as I can learn and try to keep an open mind to anything!

If I didn't overthink stuff I wouldn't be on speedtalk!
