Engine dynos
Im looking at buying an engine dyno, I want to know what you guys think is the best bang for buck & why. Im in favor of the DTS at the moment.
Thanks
Thanks

Bang for the buck would have to be the Land and Sea dyno. http://www.land-and-sea.com/
Automotive Machining, cylinder head rebuilding, engine building. Can't seem to quit

A good repeatable dyno that is easy too upgrade sensors on.
The price is really good as well.
The data acq software is very user friendly and if you want too add a sensor without buying from the dyno manufacturer it is possible.
It will handle acceleration rates from 100 to 1000+ with repeatable results.
The load controller works good with nitrous also.

The reason Im favoring the DTS is because it has inertia correlation, it will allow the engine accelerate how it wants to, not how the dyno allowed it to. Like an inertia dyno. Does the stuska , land & sea have this feature.

When I dyno with the Stuska and graph the acceleration rate it changes through the rpm range.
So I start the pull at 300 rpm/sec and as it nears peak torque the accel rate may hit 600 rpm/sec or more and as the torque falls off the accel rate slows down.
The Load controller on the Stuska has a dial that only has numbers on it.
So you put it on the setting #4 and with a sbc it my end up with an average accel rate of 300 rpm/sec, but with a BBC it will have an accel rate of 600 rpm/sec at the same setting.
I have had instances were I had reach valve train in stability before the end of a pull rpm wise and the engine stops accelerating and will not reach the needed rpm too end the pull data wise.
So the load controller is more passive.
I have never used a DTS so I can not say that the Stuska works the same or not.
The Stuska's turn key package is in the low 30k range.
I really like the DTS and the new Superflow dyno(902) as well.
They cost more however.I drooled over both dynos at the PRI show.
One thing also too consider is what you are trying too accomplish with the dyno.If your were activley pursuing turn key engines for the masses then having Superflow numbers builds credibility because it is the Defacto dyno.Same with Flow benches.

I've been running our DTS dyno for 2 years and think it's great. It doesn't seem to care if it's a 200 hp Honda at 8500 rpm or a 1000 hp Chrysler with a 400 shot. It handles both very well. Over the last 20 years I've had engines on several dyno's and the DTS is the easiest and smoothest I've seen. There may be better, but for all-around testing this one seems to fill the bill quite well.

I'd love to see an explanation of how it does this. That's not a snipe, I'm truly curious.RC Performance Engines wrote:The reason Im favoring the DTS is because it has inertia correlation, it will allow the engine accelerate how it wants to, not how the dyno allowed it to. I dont know how it does it. I do know the water brake has a water inlet control valve & a water outlet control valve. I think that other dynos only have a inlet valve only. May be some one who owns a DTS knows more

Re: Engine dynos
What is your primary purpose for the dyno? (R&D, durability, run-in, etc...)RC Performance Engines wrote:Im looking at buying an engine dyno, I want to know what you guys think is the best bang for buck & why. Im in favor of the DTS at the moment.

I have run a DTS for about ten years now and have used others before. I like it. The powermark can easily run a 50 hp engine or a 2000 hp engine. The corrections are honest and repeatable. I have run engines on DTS dyno`s in four corners of the country with the same engine and they were all vary vary close. That my freind is the standard of the industry.
Dyno`s are cheap, it all the other stuff that you need to go with it that will cost ya.

promachine,
Amen. We have 3 different fuel pumps on the dyno (engine, Nitrous & alcohol). There are 2 fuel tanks (gas & alcohol). 2 ignition systems ( MSD 6AL & MSD 10 Plus). I've also wired the panel on the dyno so I don't have to rewire everything for different engine combinations. I just throw switches and patch in whatever system/voltage I need.
