belt drives

Post by bsfc9 »

i am building a 500cid big block with a 14-71 blower and plan to use a Jesel belt drive. i have had some relate to me that problems with the belt may occur due to "harmonics" generated by driving the blower. anyone heard of this? also does it take more power to run a belt or timing chain?

We have 2 SBC with 8-71 Littlefield blowers on both these with Buick heads, These engines are used in tractor pulling and we use Shaver/Wesmar gear drives on both engines one is a Dart aluminum block the othe is a Brodix they run on alky and they turn these 9200 to 9500 for up to 45 seconds at a time one engine is at least 7 years old and the other is 3 years old and both have had no problems with that set up.

I can email some picks if needed.

i am mostly concerned with potential problems with a timing belt (vs. timing chain or gear drive) when used with a blower.

I know, A VERY OLD THREAD!!

Do people still drill little holes in the belt pulley cog valleys to let the air out from between the belt and pulleys at speed to help here??

Not sure why they would do this as there is no benefit......other than putting holes in the pulley!

I've replaced timing belts on myriad engines and none, including Ferrari and other exotics, had holes in the cam gear.
