Solid flat tappet durability on the street SBC aggressive?

Post by PaterPowerWorks »

I am somewhat conflicted about my cam choice, mostly concerned about longevity on the street.

Here are the specs.

383 chev. Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads flow 250@ .500" IN, 197@.500" EX, 11.9:1 comp., 830 holley, 1.460 springs 145lbs seat pressure 365 open, titanium retainers, 1.6 Intake rockers 1.5 exhaust.

The cam

Lunati 40146 M249-254 solid flat tappet

IN EX
288 seat 293
249 .050 254
161 .200 166
.362" lobe lift .368"
.543" 1.5 .552
.579" 1.6
.018 LASH .020

The nose radius seems pretty aggressive for a cam that will see 50% street time, I just want to be sure that it will live.

I plan on running Brad Penn oil with non oiling lifters and stock lifter bores.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

FWIW I don't an issue with longevity. Your springs will probably go soft before the cam goes flat. Be sure the lifter bores have been honed so the lifter can spin free . Avoid prolonged idling. Cams are lubed by spash from the crank.

If you use quality lifters you will have no issues with what you currently have. Also, I hope you used the EDM hole lifters, to ensure oil to the cam, where as you don't have to just rely on splash from the crank.

I run the Lunati 401A4 in my 350-
Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 275/279
Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 247/251
Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .530/.540
LSA/ICL: 108/102
Valve Lash (Int/Exh): .016/.016

You should spend the extra money on the oiling lifters. The cam and lifters will last 3 times as long. You can keep the idle nice and low, and not worry about getting enough splash oil to the cam.

I pulled the cam & lifters out of a bracket race 327 that never saw street time. So I really don't want to buy lifters if I can avoid it.
With the exact springs I mentioned before, the only difference between the 327 and my 383, 327 had steel retainers, 1.5 rockers, and idled at 1200rpm. 383 has titanium retainers, 1.6 rockers on the intake side and should be comfortable idling lower than 1200rpm.
Would grooving the lifter bores be as effective as the EDM'd lifters?

I ran 40119 with 1.6 rockers........ 292/302 256/268, .591/.609 on the street for 3 years with regular lifters, and 15000+ miles. I used VR1. Just pay attention, keep the lash and spring pressures in check, and change your oil. I also idled at 1150 in gear. Not alot of advice, just my experience.

Wouldn't that cost more then buying new oiling lifters?

Use the EDM lifters and avoid any potential issues. This would be cheap insurance.

The Valves will KISS the pistons  I used to run the Twisted Wedge heads-There canted valves. You have to have a special type flat top piston flycut for the valves. I ran a flat top 400 with about 510 lift with a 106 lobe sep. About all I could get with my set up. Good luck :D

I forgot something VERY Important  Check your pushrod length. It gets real tricky with those heads. If not assembled right you will have REAL BAD valve train geometry. Causing Early Valve guide wear  Hope I have helped some. :D

To answer Camking I've got three engines right now that may benefit from grooving the bores, all .842" dia. So if I can spread the cost I will buy the comp. tool.

With regard to the P to V clearance I am running Arias pistons designed for these heads and I have tons of room.

Thanks for the response though Econo, I am running different length pushrods on the intake and exhaust.
I do appreciate your input, my main concern was cam longevity on the street with a somewhat aggressive solid cam.

I have been using that cam in my 377 for a few years now, street and strip, with 1.6 int and 1.5 exh.

No problems so far and it is a great dual purpose cam.
