alky vs. gas

Post by grant6395 »

ok here it is..i bought one of those sv1 carbs from patric james(pro systems)the alky version.1100 cfm or so.i had one of his 1050 domnators .(gas)worked well. here is my question.i belive the design of the sv1 will make more and usable power through the curve, but how much can a guy realisticaly expect to gain or loose going to methanol once properly tuned .the combo is a 443 ci windsor ford.864 :?: hp on c16 vp.

Several percent by fuel change alone.

Simply changing from gas to methanol can gives gains of 4-5% in many aplications. If the ports are matched for the larger volume of fuel, a bit more can be had. If not, the engine will peak a few hundred rpm lower.

If you take full advantage of the cooling effect of methanol, there is a bit more to be had.

Depends on compression, but with your 14:1, you should see a 5-6% gain.

Motors with poor heads can see larger gains.

I dont know about carbed alky, but I switched a 12 to 1, 440 mopar from carbed gas to injected alcohol and the car picked up 5 tenths. Alcohol is well worth it, no more water, runs cooler, cheaper, more power, more consistant and its way easier to tune.

I will never run gas again.

On the back to back, expect 10-20% in the 3000-5500 rpm range and depending on chamber design and available CSA in the ports, -5% to 10% on the top end. Speed of the burn has the most effect on the top end numbers. In restricted motors the oxygen in methanol will allow us to gain 25-30% on the top end depending on rules. I hope you feel free to post the % differences. These number are extremely consistent. Good luck,

Have seen no gain IN GOOD AIR from a 468 iron head BBC w/tunnel ram x2 660's to a Flying toilet.
135mph gas 135mph alky 9.75 ets
results speak for themselves

I ran an alky injected altered in the mid 90's used about 170% the amount of fuel & larger nozzels buy about the same % larger pump & lines & about 3 tenths when runing in the 7.90's range before w/ERC 116 I think, don't remember what gas but went into the high 7.50's first run on alky had to inlarge all fuel components to accomadate the alky but was cheaper per gallon, ran cooler like 50 deg.s, had to warm up in pitts before every round, could hot lap all day, the only down fall is verry corrosive had to drain fuel system after every pass to not get oxedation on all aluminum parts in fuel system that woud clog the nozzels, switched to stainless fittings & could make it thru the day at least then drain & run gas thru system to keep form cloging everything up with what I was told was oxidized aluminum & other aloys in the fuel system, Budnicks

We really dont know how much power its making, too much for the car to use, in good air I bet we could make close to 1600 with a good and nasty tune.

Alky is a little corrosive to fuel systems, aluminium is the most affected but top-lube helps and a with little post race maintanance you wont have a problem.

pooh, just lost a post... Anyway, we do an OEM methanol/gasoline EFI dual fuel (4 gasoline and 4 methanol injectors) system in China - and it's 0 maintenance, except you should use the lube additive. The pump manufacturers took a while to figure it out during the development stage, but now it seems fine.

Moral is - if you can get the parts made from the right materials, it'll hold up pretty well. If not, I'm not much help.
