1966 350SS block.

I lost my 1966, 350SS block years ago so am wondering who to contact to try to come up with a period correct block?

I ordered my '67 SS/RS Camaro in Oct, '66 and took possession of it in Dec, '66 so it is a real, "1966", '67 Camaro!

So why would not a block cast in the first half of 67 work for you?
Is there not a 4 month window on each side of the August production change point where all is Golden!

Be aware that the '67 350 blocks have some particular characteristics not found on the '68's.

I have not ever seen a large journal block with a casting date any time in 1966. 1967 for a '68 production, yes. The early ones have that tall area that surrounds the distributor inside of the valley. Those are not that common. I think too that the really early ones are all two bolt main.

Aren't blocks date coded like heads?

If so, then it would have to be a '66 block! Probably between Aug. and Oct., maybe early Nov./'66......

And right, the '66/'67 350SS blocks have the draft tube casting boss back by the dizzy and oil separation canister under the intake manifold that was done away with in '68. 2-bolt main, large journal..

I was storing my 350SS short block out at Doc's place so just MAYBE it's still out there buried in the weeds?? But I really doubt it. I'm talking since the early '80's here.

I've never seen a large journal block that was machined to accommodate the road draft tube and canister. The really old ones that I've seen had a cast boss that went up about even with the rear China wall that had a hole for the distributor to stick through. I think they also had a hole drilled through that boss down near the bottom of the valley floor.

As pdq says above, I'm pretty sure the '67 large journal 350 block had the hole for the draft tube (used for closed PCV system in 1967). One-year-only deal, and only in the Camaro SS.

And I forgot that the '66/'67 350SS block still has the oil filler tube casting boss under the oil filler tube in the intake manifold.

GM did away with it too in '68.

And right, the rear china wall has the smog tube casting boss on it and this boss has a big hole down by its bottom in its side so that the oil separator canister can be installed laying down.

I've never seen a large journal with anything but a spin on oil filter did it have that or the cartridge style? I'd like to see a picture of a large journal block with the breather can in the valley I don't believe that exists. I know I've never seen a large journal casting with a boss for the breather can mounting bolt.

My Dad bought a 3/4 ton chevy longhorn new in 69. That block had the tube covering the dist and a canister filter. I still have this block. I believe it came with nodular caps on the center 4 bolts. Came with 1.72 76 cc heads and a cast large journal crank. Thanks, Charlie

These are 302 and 327 SJ blocks!

Not 350SS blocks.

Now hopefully somebody here will personally know??

Are the main bolts in the 1967 350SS block farther apart than the main bolts in the 1967 302 and 327 blocks to accommodate the larger crank journals?

No. The factory main caps are simply machined for the larger main bearings and the block relieved somewhat for the crank.

The 3892657 '67 350-295 block has the breather in the valley and the road draft setup on the back of the block is a 90 degree fitting to which a hose attaches and runs down by the starter. Plus it has a canister oil filter. It's the only passenger car large journal block to have had a canister filter.
