Need mild 1.550" OD single springs and retainers.

Post by PackardV8 »

Building Packard V8s. We're needing an affordable spring and retainer package. The OEM springs are NLA. I've modified early Cad OHV8 springs and retainers, which are now also NLA. So we need 1.550" OD springs and retainers for .375" stem valves; 100# seat pressure @ 1.75" is fine.

Most of the 1.550" OD springs in the catalogs are part of race-heavy dual spring packages. Any idea which other engines might come with 1.550" OD springs as OEM? Who offers low seat pressure aftermarket single springs and retainer packages?

All ideas and leads appreciated.

What is the smallest ID for a spring you could use?

The OEM ID is 1.170", but if everything else were right, we could machine the guide boss OD to fit.

Found a couple of SBI part numbers that might work for you.
160-1424 1.547 O.D. 73@1.752 lbs
160-1089 1.500 O.D. 80@1.800 lbs

hope this might help :D

Why not use an under spring ID locator with smaller lighter spring and retainer?

What about something like this? It would open up a LOT of spring options.

I’m not sure what locator ID you would need, but something like this might work

You could check 383/440 Mopar. Maybe a single spring with damper will get the job done.

Load wise, a Comp 942 would probably work for you, but you’ll likely have to machine the spring pad.
Somewhat handy with a die grinder.

The Packard V8 uses an integral guide with a 1.170" boss at the base to locate the spring. It could be machined to take a smaller locator, but that adds labor and materials. That's the last option if a drop in spring can't be found.

Looking through an old Federal-Mogul catalog, I see that using the outer spring of the VS1321 dual spring package would be almost perfect. The outer spring is 1.55” OD, 1.170” ID, 125#’s at 1.700” installed height, 286# spring rate which off the top of my head would be about 110# at 1.750”.

Not sure if it still available though. A quick search online comes up empty so far

Jack do you have an SBI catalog? (Paper catalog is best). In the back are springs by OD. Then you can check the specs by the number. Happy hunting!
