With a randy valve job 440 ft/lbs and 460 hp @ 6000rpm
With a SPECIAL Randy valve job ( 50deg seats and port work) add 20-25 hp

The last snotty engine I used hype pistons in came out with lots of stress cracks. That one didn't spin very hard. 6500 rpm. So, with Randy's vj it will make nice power. Looks good and let us know how it does. Thanks, Charlie

Re: Real Budget Vortec Engine build
This one will most likely not get port work or very little(need to get back to Overflowz) And to be fair Randy would have to actually claim the valve job. I'm just usually asked at Creason's if I want a regular valve job(45°) or a "Randy" valve job(50°). its a running joke there.
But anyway, I hope it makes 400hp. Not a lot of money in it, reusing lifters etc. It will be a 305 tuned port replacement for my buddy's son. 89 Trans Am. The car currently is worn out and runs 16.20's or so.
I just wanted to knock this one out fairly quick. Its fun trying to make a little something out of nothing . All factory parts and something that I'm not used to...….everything fits.

Re: Real Budget Vortec Engine build
I guess you mean the old style 5/64 rings? I am going to say this will be 430 hp +/- 20 hp.
I am assuming a 3.48" crank. You didn't say.
Re: Real Budget Vortec Engine build
Yes. 5/64 rings....gross....its been awhile since Ive messed with those. And yeah, stock crank turned .010 .010

Re: Real Budget Vortec Engine build
You're saying those numbers are coming from a 96+ vortec casting?
I guess around 460'ish too but not at 6,000.. more like 6,200-6,300 with a 3.48" stroke.
Re: Real Budget Vortec Engine build
No those numbers are not from a vortec head. The best I have done on a cleaned up vortec styled head was 275 cfm. Thanks, Charlie

Re: Real Budget Vortec Engine build
Got everything measured last night. I should get around to putting the short block together tonight, depending on if Brenden is available(My buddy's son)...he seems to enjoy being involved, but unfortunately we have somewhat conflicting schedules.
I have a weird phenomenon going on with my bore gauge that has me kinda bugged. Anyway....we will see how this this thing runs . I really hate the rings. I bought a 15lb oil ring set (3/16), I assume the E251K30 ring set comes with the 22lb ring. But Im not sure I will even dick with it on this thing honestly, although they do feel nicer in the bore ... The oil ring is only part of the problem. I haven't had to "beat" a piston in the bore for awhile
The heads were machined for screw in studs and guide plates, so I can ditch the self aligning stuff. I will be using GM#12499224 valve spring set which is the factory LS3-LS6 beehive with COMP Cams 787-16 Beehive retainers, this creates a lot more room between the retainer and guide boss. It usually eliminates needing to machine the guide for lift, also cool, but that spring is pretty tame so I will be choosing some lobes that are calm enough to keep things happy. Anyone here messed with a Pro Products Vortec manifold?
