6.0 ls camshaft opinions

Post by JodyB »

Hi all!! I have a 2000 chevy 1500 4x4. 4L60 trans with 2500 converter, 3.42 gears, and stock size tires. Probably 5000 pounds or so. Building a 6.0 to replace the 5.3 and looking for all the midrange torque possible with a 6000rpm shift. Trailblazer ss style truck intake, 799 cathedral port heads(similar to ls6 243 heads), 10.3:1 cr, long tube headers, low restriction inlet and ex systems. I'm really leaning towards something in the 200-205 intake, 205-210 ex at 50 to shoot for a 55-5800 peak. Maybe on a 108-110 lsa to get all the midrange torque possible? A rough idle is acceptable, and i have software to tune it. Any thoughts or opinions?

Take a look at the Crane #1449551 camshaft. Its a great cam in a 6.0L like you are planning.

What's a SS "style" intake? Is that an actual oem truck intake or some aftermarket SS "style" intake like you describe it. If it's a truck intake, it wouldn't be a whatever style intake. Itd be a truck intake. Would it not? Just trying to understand what you're describing. We're not all LS people over here that know exactly what all this refers to.

I would go a different way. There is NO need for a rough idle to reach your goals (unless you just want a rough idle)

This Jones cam was made for me to have a good idle, strong midrange power and retain good economy.

Jones Cam # HR67312-69312 it’s 212*- 218* @ .050” , 114* LC, .530” lift w 1.7 RR

The trailblazer ss intake manifold later became the 2007 up truck intake.

The cam Kieth is recommending is almost identical to the Crane cam I mentioned. Make sure you follow cam companies recommendation on valve springs.

Kip at Camotion is a great cam developer and his results in LS engines is substantial.

I have started using his zero lash solid roller designs in some of my street,/strip and racing builds with great results.

As for your question, don't undercam from a duration standpoint that 6.0 of yours looking for more low end grunt. I think the specs for the second choice listed is a better cam for your use and the lsa will keep your EFI happier with a nice idle and mpg better.

Thankyou for the advice and experience guys. The ideas pointing me towards a small cam are 5000ish lbs, 3.42 gears, 2500 converter, 6000rpm shift, and the wide gear ratios of a 4l60.
My research of 5.7 and 6.0 ls engines with headers and low restriction inlet&exhaust seems to indicate cams with over 210 at 50 intake duration begin to push the hp peak to 6000-6200ish rpm, sacrificing some useful low rpm torque. Though most are using a fairly retarded 114ish Intake centerline.

Intake is on 110*, I’d expect you will be happy with it. My customers are.

However, it’s easy enough to discuss it with Mike Jones.

These were interesting results from a 5.7 ls1 gto with every possible bolt on, electric water pump, ported Advanced Induction heads, 11:1cr and a stock ls1 camshaft.
