narrow rod bearings for 347 ford?

Post by rewguy »

I have a 347 ford with chevy dia. journals. I used a 663HN bearing, which fits the housing bore perfectly, but overhangs out the side of the rod about .040. I'm sure there's a specific bearing for this app.....but not sure what it is. The rods are older (but new) eagle H beam.

Many professional engine builders have fixtures/tooling for narrowing bearings. The CB-663 series is very popular and there were several companies offering tools for narrowing these bearings, such as Bill Mitchell Products, Goodson, etc.

Those are the old 200 and 229 Chevy V6 bearings.

YES ... pretty common for a 2.100" diameter journal but, having a 302 FORD width.

Pretty sure Clevite has them listed in an "H" bearing also. In the performance section of the catalog under "custom"

Just asking, if the overhang doesn't get into a large radius on the crank cheek, has anyone seen damage resulting from the extra width?

Just speaking theoretically...

If the bearing overhang extends past the inner cheek of the rod and the freedom of movement in the rod pair allows the two adjacent bearing sets to meet, the flow of oil and rejection of heat could be restricted and that will negatively affect the temperature gradient of the bearing shell, possibly leading to failure. This inner rod-cheek overhang may or may not be coincidental with getting into the large radius on the crank cheek; not all rods are symmetrical in that respect.

   Sorry, the bearing width has nothing to do with much unless it actually touches the crank.
Heat is energy, energy is horsepower...but you gotta control the heat.
