Add insurance into your shipping/handling price, if the custome doesnt like that tell them to organize their own shipping.

Make the customer very well aware that if they dont get insurance and the parts are damaged then the ownus is on them to wear all replacement costs.
Craig, maybe you've had better experience with UPS/FedEx insurance claims than I have, but my couple of tries at making them pay for theft and damage were wasted effort. It seems they've outsourced their insurance claims department to a third party who gets paid a bonus for how many claims aren't paid. Every time I called with the claim number, asking why they hadn't paid up, they couldn't find anything and made me start all over with another cretin who knew nothing, promised nothing and it came to nothing.

exhaustgases wrote: Thu Jul 11, 2019 1:58 pm All cams should be shipped by wrapping first with a bubble wrap and then a section of PVC pipe that it all fits in real tight, and of course being a thick schedule pipe like 120. Will it cost more? Is the cam worth it? I suppose you can also find the real thick cardboard rolls as well, some of it is pretty stiff.
Next idea would be a nice wood board to tie it to before boxing it. Harbor freight zip ties are cheap.
PVC is brittle, and will break when dropped.
I've had countless customers send me their cam to regrind, in a PVC tube, and about 1/4 of them were in broken tubes, by the time they got to me.

if the PVC is showing up broken they are clearly beating the shit out of the thing during shipping.

I wonder if 2 or 3 fragile stickers has any persuasion on the way it is handled?

That's nothing, I've received 2/3 of a 4.0 jeep crank half the bearings and tire marks on what was left of the box. I told the driver " I think you guys got a little rough with this one" he said I've seen worse.

The very old joke, among UPS workers is "Fragile" is Italian for "Throw".

What I was told is the biggest issue, is that when they put the long cam boxes on the conveyor belt, sometimes the ends of the box will get hung up on something, and a large, heavy box will try to push it's way through the middle of the cam box.

Guy receives a thick envelope in the mail. It bears a sticker reading: "Photos. Do not bend!" It's folded in half and someone has scribbled on it: "Sure they do!" #-o

I shipped a Subaru WRX engine to be rebuilt to the Upper Northwest from Mo and when it came back it was on the pallet, upside down, with a box covering two halves. Somehow they managed to break the damn thing in half. I spend some time with UPS and FedEx for work and I've witnessed just how much they care.

I had two shipped ups one broke in half like the one shown and the second wasn't even in box? You could see the holes in both boxes. That latter one was bbf custom grind sent with other parts. ??Parts were there and all good. Made me wonder if someone at ups needed a bbf grind??? I quit using them completely went to postal service. 10 times better!!

Having worked for FedEx back in the day no matter how well packaged, protected and insured, we can break it.

I'm tempted to mail myself an anvil plastered with FRAGILE stickers just to challenge the troglodytes...

Yet another arcane report unearthed! Great stuff Kevin. To put the max recorded 100g into perspective, here's a quote from http://www.formula1-dictionary.net/g_force.html : "Usually, accelerations beyond 100 g, even if momentary, are fatal."

I'm flashing on Adam Savage of Mythbusters hurling himself off a 35' high building in a four foot cylinder of Bubble Wrap...

PS: I wonder if aircraft Black Boxes can survive cross-country shipping? :-k

Here's a box that arrived here, the slot was the perfect shape of a fork lift tine then taped over, the contents of the box were speared through from one side to the other. The box was delivered with the person holding it with the damage facing away from me,when i signed it was also rotated as it was placed on the counter so it then also faced away from me,, as the person walked away i spun the box around to pick it up and saw the damage, i called them back as i got the phone out and took a photo,,, i told them not to worry about it too much as the date and time of signing matched the photo of the box with them in the background..

The ensuing shit fight even bought up that i may have been mistaken with my interpretation of the photo????

I have not included the point of delivery photo.

I have a stack of photos of damaged delivery's, they are sent immediately back to the consignor for them to deal with, my packaging regime includes a lot of cardboard separators and packers, bubble wrap and pactivate provide next to no protection to castings.

Cheers.
