Spacers were allowed 8" total from lifter valley rails to top of spacers.
As far as cam timing goes the 289 is at the extreme of one end. Small packaging makes for short runners, and large bore allows for alot curtain area. A 1.9" valve in a 289 is equivalent area /in. to a 2.25 in a 427. So your peak flows will be relative per cu/in.. The one thing most people overlook is that the 289 will have about 25% more low lift flow relative to size.
Runner length and curtain area have influenced more of my cam descisions latley than flow numbers.
The cam your buddy chose may very well make a few more ponies at 7200rpm than mine, but I wouldn't expect anything to happen much below about 5000rpm.. If he was running smaller valves and a tunnel ram or something with longer runners he might not be far off.

I'd like too know what those 289 heads flowed when you were done with them,if you would be so kind.

The heads flowed 235 cfm @600 and 190 exhaust@.600. These heads still have good port wall thickness. You could find a little more out of them but run the risk of having something unreliable.
You don't have put a ton of thought into it to realize that with 12.5 or 13.0:1 compression and a taste more camshaft and a single plane that you could start knocking on 500hp if you were willing to spin it 7600-7800rpm!
I know the hitters are already doing this but it just sounds cool to say it.

Those are real world flow numbers with serious work. I just want to see what this mill would do with a tunnel ram and dual fours. Elroy, if you had read my 289 head thread you would know that Bill C bailed me out and sent me one of his cnc heads after I made a sprinkler out of one. For doing me this huge favor he wanted a chunk ( In, ex ports) of the sprinkler head to see if he missed anything doing his cnc work. So IF Bill did any adjustment after looking at my work and incorporated it into his cnc program does that mean I had any part in Mummert's win? I think not but it made me feel good thinking of that possibility.

Just noticed the xcelerator is still sold whats your opinion of it for a hot st car in general?

Those two sets of 289 heads are still at Terry Walters shop awaiting DV to dyno test them. You could/should test them yourself///that way you know////a 289 or 302 shortblock could be done for a reasonable amount I would think/////you could probably tool one up in your sleep///do you have a dyno local
