Well...aren’t those just the cutest little pistons you ever seen

How far are the pistons down in the hole now?

Looks like you’ve got the .020” reduced height pistons as well, which isn’t helping your cause at all.

I know, the shorter C/H is making a full cleanup cut across the entire piston top look a bit difficult to make happen.

Stock pistons are .022 down as it sits now (original shim gaskets measure .016-.018ish). When I pull it apart, if the stock pistons have the top ring lower than the Clevites, I'll machine those to fit instead, nothing wrong with them, I just picked up the replacements because they were dirt cheap. If I end up with a full .125 deep cleanup on the Clevites the top ring is going to be rather close, but at the expected power level I think it should survive.

So...it sounds like the stock setup was about perfect. And you probably can’t find a stock replacement small bore shim gasket any more.

Dramatically overkill, and you will have to cut valve reliefs, but this would let you mill the pistons to close to a flat top. This would raise the pistons .150”. You may have to use a 305 head to keep the compression in check.

Since the quench distance is the problem to be solved, let's simplify this: C/H to the bottom of the dish is 1.416. Call it 'effective C/H'. How much the rest of the piston gets cut is whatever it takes to make parts not bang into each other.

Assuming 9.025 deck for all this, which could be totally wrong in reality... if it turns out to be shorter that just makes the numbers work out easier. I very much doubt it will be taller than 9.025.
3.75 crank + 5.7 rod + 1.416 comes to 8.991, or .034 in the hole. Plus a ~.018 gasket... .052 may be close enough, may be on the edge of too much to be effective quench.
3.48 crank + 5.85 rod + 1.416 is 9.006, or .019 in the hole plus .018 gasket equals .037, I like that number for this bore size.

And the small bore shim gaskets are still available because I have the ones that came off the motor. Some WD40, a wire brush, copper spray and they're good as new.

Working the math backwards: If the block is 9.025, 1/2 the stroke is 1.74, 5.7 rod, pistons .022 down, the C/H of the stock pistons is 1.563. C/H to the bottom of the dish would be 1.438.

So then 3.75 crank with 5.7 rod would put the bottom of the dish surface at only .012 below deck. That's close enough I could use the Chevy Perf 10105117 composition gaskets at .028" thick. The stockers also have the top ring slightly farther down from the top at .284", leaving a top land of .159ish after cutting. Numbers all around work out better than with the Clevites.

Well, having discovered that there is nowhere local I can buy a flat tappet compatible oil, I think this will have to use a B-body OE roller cam with the short 60* V6 roller lifters. I lost three engines within 6 months back in... '99-00? from the 'new improved' oil and haven't gone anywhere near a flat tappet again since. Don't know why I was even considering using one this time.

Do you have an O’Reillys nearby? Mine carries valvoline VR-1 but I had to ask them to get something thinner than 20w-50.

Where do you live, out of curiosity?

BFE, Mississippi.

Same here, VR1 20W-50 readily available but I can't live with an engine that requires special-order oil. It would make me want to hurt somebody eventually. And with my luck it would still wipe a lobe and turn into another glitter factory.

Good news is, the water jackets in the lifter valley on this little 267 are much smaller than the common non-roller 350 block so it only needs minor clearancing on the lifter dogbones, no block grinding required. Bad news, the lifters are expensive.
