Dodge StreetVan w/360ci Alu.heads - ProFlo4 - Camchoice

Post by BigBlockMopar »

Most likely I'll be putting together a Mopar smallblock 360ci for a friend's mid '70s Dodge StreetVan soon.
Aiming for (close to) 10:1cr with aluminium heads and dished KB-pistons.
Friend is set on using Edelbrock's ProFlo-4 EFI-system.

Street/Weekend use only. Weighs about 1900kg/4200 lbs. I think it has 3.23:1 rear axle gears.
Should be a worryless driver.

So we got to discussing camshafts.
Don't like FT hydraulics myself given the issues with hydr. lifters I've had, and don't see him checking/setting lash occassionally. Especially not in a van.
That most likely leaves a hydraulic roller.

The van currently has a 2-bbl 318 with headers and probably 8.6:1cr, and ofcourse power is lacking.
Owner wants a noticable amount of more torque.
I compared his goal to my own Mopar 360ci, which has a CompCams XE256H, but runs on LPG with 11.3:1cr. His engine will run on gasoline.

What do you think and what duration/lift would you consider for a setup like this?

What is the difference in the hydraulics between a flat tappet and roller tappet? They are essentially the same. If you are having cams go flat, that's another issue. The only time I've had issues with that was back in the mid 2000's when the chink lifters were faced flat, not convex. Other than that, no issues.

I know the basics are the same, but different production line/sources perhaps?
With my (limited) engine-building experience, I've never read about ticking hydraulic rollers yet, or loosing their prime/colapse while running, while I've had a couple of experiences with FT hydr. lifters doing that. And also read about similar issues on the net.

Do a search. It's common. It's the hydraulics. I say put a solid in it and go. If lashing the valves once a year in s van doesn't sound good to you, you'll most likely have to live with ticking. A nice, easy tight lash solid lifter lobe with a decent valve train shouldn't need to be lashed more than once every 20-25k if that.

Something along the lines of the Lunati 711 Voodoo.

The valvetrain won’t likely be whisper quiet though.
Somewhat handy with a die grinder.

Thanks.
I think he can live with some light engine noise. The Van is a 'fun'-weekend driver.

What brand heads will he run?

Most likely SpeedMasters, if their Black Friday-sale is happening this year. Last year it saved me over 30% on the price.

For the highest Torque output from that 360 cid motor you want to run a good amount of valve lift ( into the low .500s ) to both take advantage of the motors lifter size and get deep into being near the max flow level that the Intake side of those heads have to offer.

The weight of that Van and its poor rear gearing will love big Torque numbers!

Spoke with the friend yesterday and costs being a factor here, it will most likely be a flat tappet hydraulic cam.
Upgrading to a rollercam usually adds at least another grand to the build (cam / lifters / interm.shaft / pushrods), so that's a tough cookie at the moment.

That's one we use for towing, and heavy van conversions.
It makes a bunch of torque, but it's all done by 5,000rpm.

I would think it could benefit from more duration to take advantage/start to make use of the bigger heads.

I don’t know what its like over there getting machine work done on factory American heads, but if you have some stock 360 heads that aren’t cracked for cores, I’d be tempted to go for a stroker rotating assy instead of the aftermarket heads for something like a heavy van with 3.23 gears.
I think it would feel much more lively.
