Any experience w/ Braswell 14"-15" tapered air cleaner?

Post by BradH »

Braswell has air cleaner setups for their 4825 and 4760 (4150) carbs that use drop bases and 4"-tall K&N-type elements that taper out from 14" at the bottom to 15" at the top. Has anyone used or tested this style of air cleaner, especially the 4150 version? I'm interested in any feedback or results that people can provide. Thanks - Brad

Do you have a link to that? I tried to google it but I can never find anything on the braswell site.

Easier to post some pics of the used one I picked up to try, and the typical Moroso 14" drop-base like I've been using. The Moroso is mocked up with a 3.5" filter, and the Braswell filter is actually a little bigger than 14.0" at the base and tapers out as it rises 4.0".

The bases are shaped very differently, with the Braswell both dropped more and consistent in form all the way around.

I have the highest regard for Braswell, but their spun base looks to choke off much of the flow from at least the bottom inch of the filter. Mind you, at 4.5" tall, there's enough area remaining to feed 1,000 HP...

The GM L88/Z28 base that the Moroso part slightly resembles is a much better choice when the filter height is limited.

They look the same as the air cleaners from Allstar.

Hmmm. They do look the same don't they?

Thanks for all the pictures Brad. I'm interested as I need a new base so I can run a 4 inch filter and shut the hood. That may be the answer.

I have adaptor rings that will fit the 4825 and allow a Dominator air cleaner if that would work... We use them on the large oval blade and BLP Extreme bodies.

Braswell says their tapered filter is 14.25 to 15.25. The Allstar base looks similar, but I can't tell if it pulls back from the filter base like the Braswell, or is more vertical / more restrictive, especially without having the benefit of the tapered filter element.

I've looked at the reproduction L88 bases before and won't rule out picking up one of those, too. However, you see what I have already above.

For me, it's a case of limited clearance between the air cleaner lid and the underside of the scoop while still wanting to be able to fit a spacer under the carb. Depending upon the air cleaner height, even a 1/2" spacer could be a tight squeeze.
