Diesels really respond to propane or natural gas conversion because the comp ratio. Gets rid of the stink and usually increases the power

Easy conversion on the old diesels without much electronics

An inline 6 would be nice, I am not sure if a 6 would fit though.

I wonder what the longest engine put in a 123 is?

Looks like there was a SOHC 6.

I am going to try to find one.

The same chassis had the 110 dual overhead cam engine in the mid 70s. It had a solex branded carb that was a carbon copy of a quadrajet. There are these motors running around with 500k + miles. One of the best. 3.5 and 4.5 v8 also rock solid. Heck the old 220s and se were amazing in the late 50s. I had the unique opportunity to work around the block from road and track magazine when I was a kid. 300sl were regular street drivers at that time. Lots of fun.

1961 - 63 Buick/Pontiac/Olds 215 engines employ a unique bell housing pattern, flywheel and ring gear - - few came with manual trans and the autos were dogs
Aftermarket bell housings were available to fit GM pattern Muncie or Saginaw manual trans, and aftermarket ring gears were also produced
Rover manufactured an improved version from 1967 to 1998 in capacities to 4.6 liter, parts being interchangeable with the original BOP engine

A ford v-8, 289 302 etc. I think is the narrowest of the the V-8's several years ago I did a 289 into a Jaguar, fit really nice. I would say this would be the best swap.
Not sure what part of the country you are in, but make sure it's old enough you can legally drive it. Federal emissions laws say a vehicle must have same engine type and emissions package as produced. Not sure of the cutoff date on the year. I had a student that built a 350 S-10, In Missouri it's up to the vehicle inspector to check general emissions when they get inspected for yearly licence. Only St. Louis area gets specific emissions testing. And most inspectors look only at safety stuff, so enforcement is not really an issue. But this student got pulled over for speeding, and the highway patrol was smart enough to know they never put a V-8 into a S-10, so he had it impounded and they would not let him drive it any more on the street.

Not actually looking for anything powerful.
I wish they were into fast cars.
Both my kids turned down new KTM dirt bike, and drivers positions on top notch Jr Dragster team.

Just smoother, quieter, not smelling like diesel and for familiar tech to work on.
I want him to enjoy points and carbs if possible.

I have been offered a 2300 Ford and a Slant six for free.

There is a 1970 gas Mercedes 6 cylinder near by I might consider.
