I like to read Sci-Fi so will wait until we create capacitor type energy storage methods.

Not battery type storage methods.

You're an old guy and still believe in magic? I have in my basement a glass cylinder with a ceramic lid with a hole in the top. It's an original Thomas Edison R.S. Signal wet cell battery used for powering telegraphs. For the past 150 years, it's a straight line development from that glass cylinder to today's LiOn batteries. Wouldn't the superiority of capacitor storage emerge somewhere in that time?

Different demands, maybe? A capacitor in theory might charge a whole lot faster than a battery. That hasn't ever really been the goal of battery R&D in the face of trying to get more juice in a smaller space/weight.

Jack,

Back when I was a kid, about early spring of '66, the RR's still had some track telephone lines and out-house sized shacks with batteries like you are talking about in them sitting on a flat board on the floor.

Big tall thick walled open-top rect. glass jars with acid and lead plates in them to power their telephone lines.

I helped the Foreman by carrying the telephone wire clip-on pole and crank phone that he used to get track time from the dispatcher every so often so he would know when to clear the tracks of the tie gang machines when a through train was coming.

Boy, I haven't thought about this in years..

Probably don't want to charge one of those up in an electrical outlet and leave it sitting on the parts counter for the parts guy to pick up like we used to do in vo-tech... :)

He, He!!

Ya, right.

Some of the guys would charge a B&S lawnmower engine capacitor and sit it out someplace so some unsuspecting Dude would get lit up!!

He, He!!

Lithium–sulfur battery may be the dream of Henry Ford and Thomas Edison becoming reality.

Within a year, I hope, we shall begin the manufacture of an electric automobile. I don't like to talk about things which are a year ahead, but I am willing to tell you something of my plans.

The fact is that Mr. Edison and I have been working for some years on an electric automobile which would be cheap and practicable. Cars have been built for experimental purposes, and we are satisfied now that the way is clear to success. The problem so far has been to build a storage battery of light weight which would operate for long distances without recharging. Mr. Edison has been experimenting with such a battery for some time.

Our parts guys have a demo dummy battery that weighs maybe a pound or two. Every once in a while they lay that up on the counter then laugh when the tech either smashes himself in the face or throws it over their shoulder when they pick it up, expecting 50 lbs of real battery!

Interesting. https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/0 ... botka.html
Certainly, there is a growing appetite for electric vehicles. Electric vehicle penetration rates are rising across many countries, with the UK reaching a penetration rate of 7% in March, Germany setting a new record at 9% and France reaching a plug-in electric vehicle penetration rate of 12%. The same pattern is evident in many other countries. In Portugal, Tesla’s Model 3 became the second bestselling car in March, just behind the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, and in Italy—one of the countries worst affected by the COVID-19 pandemic—electric vehicle sales are also at record high levels.
