Opinions on Elgin HPV valves

Post by Ron Miller »

What's your opinion on Elgin HPV valves? Who manufactures this valve for Elgin? What kind of seat and open pressure will this valve tolerate? I'm interested in HPV-27 BB Chevy 2.250 11/32 and HPV-20 BB Chevy 1.88 11/32. For the record, I did call Elgin yesterday, they are closed on Fridays.

Thanks for looking, =D>

Elgin manufactures most, if not all, of their own products. They are not simply a distributor.

I have used their valves, cams and other engine parts withh good success over the years.

Looking at the video BOOT posted here the Elgin valves he bought are Chinese...should not be surprised I guess. Not to say they won't work...

Anyone have any comments on the actual quality of these valves to add? "Made in China" really isn't very useful in this day and age.

I have never used any of the BBC valves. But I have used the SBC and LS valves. Both clearly say on the box, "Made in Argentina."

Not sure if you can see it that well in my screenshot but these seem to say Made in China on the box. Maybe Elgin has recently changed suppliers or where their factory is located.

It sure looks like China, but for sure it doesn't say Argentina... :?

I have a set of 2.02's and 1.60s here for my 327, I haven't even LOOKED to see where they are from, honestly I don't care. I care whether they are any good or not, and that has little to do with where they are made, it has a hell of a lot MORE to do with the attitude of the AMERICAN corporation that selected the contractor that makes them than it does to do with where that contractor is located.

That is true...China can make things as cheap as you wish...just the quality will reflect your choice.

When you ship overseas, customs requires the country of manufacture. I made two declarations earlier today -- I have answered that specific question many, many thousands of times.

I actually didn't check the boxes of my Elgin 2.02/1.6 set I just got but they do say China. I kinda figured they were coming from the same place peeps been saying most valves come from, south of the equator.

Anyways if you didn't see my video where I compare them to other valves, you could see they were not undercut as much. Been meaning to weight and compare, so just weighted a few intakes and they were 117+ vs others ebay generic or Manley of same dia/length 113/114, I don't have a flow bench so no info there. Now that I know that I'll prob buy diff valves next time, I mean if your gonna have undercut why not have the full cut or nothing at all.

I do not mind quality-made parts from wherever. I don't especially like a company deliberately trading on "made-in-the-USA" being conflated with "made-in-the-USA quality."

Just in case that is not clear: they are artfully playing you.
