SBC daily driver
Can you run floating rods in a daily driver? What if I wanted to make a 1200 mile trip. Any thing to worry about?

No problem at all. Every diesel engine I know of has full floating rods. FE Fords had them as did a lot of small block Chryslers.

My Toyota Camry 4 cylinder with all most 300,000 miles has floating pins in the rods. Some over the road diesels have gone over 2.000,000 miles with floating pins.

Every GM LS engine since around 2005 has used floating pins/bushed rods.

Re: SBC daily driver
I remember a 3.3l V6 in a caravan that inadvertently went full floating. It was the strangest thing. The customer came in complaining of an oil leak. Well, it was leaking oil, alright. The exhaust manifolds were a carbon seal design (gasketless) and oil was streaming out of the center exhaust port of the rear bank. I naturally thought the valve cover was leaking onto the manifold, but a mirror inspection revealed a clean and dry cylinder head above the manifold. After pulling the head and really scrutinizing the valve stem seal and guide, I noticed the grooves worn into the cylinder wall. I dropped the pan and shoved the piston out and the pin literally fell out of the rod and piston. It never smoked or made any noise, it just drooled oil out of the exhaust port.

Hadn't thought of that! With steel pins, wouldn't the ends have to be sealed watertight for them the float?prairiehotrodder wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 11:55 am they are especially important on boat engines.
