SBF Oil Pump Spring Spacer

Post by frnkeore »

SBF factory oil pressure is 40 - 60 lb @ 2000 rpm.

I want to increase it by about 15 - 20 lb so, I'm assured to have at least 60 - 75 max lb.

Is there a spring available to do that or do I need to add a spacer behind the stock spring? If so, what thickness have you used and what pressure did you get with it?

Has anyone made a adjustable mechanism to increase oil pressure, if so, how did you do it?

This engine has .002 clearance on both rod and mains and has a 1/4" restriction to the lifter galleys, .070 to the cam bearings and will turn 7400+.

Are you saying you want "60-75 psi max" at your noted 2000 rpm? If so, there is neither a spring nor amount of shims that will do that; you'd need a different oil pump that moves more oil. For starters.

Now if you want "60-75 psi max" at 7500 rpm, then yes, you can shim the oil pump bypass spring.

Over here we shim the Melling M84 series oil pumps for the Big Block Fords, and in those pumps each 0.060" shim increases peak pressure by about 10 psi. Your small block pump may respond differently.

We offer that feature for the M84 series pumps that we prep & sell; unfortunately our website is currently being rebuilt so I can't link a picture for you to view. Basically, we incorporate a set screw with a lock nut on the side of the oil pump which preloads the bypass spring so as to adjust/increase peak pressure.

And so if you want increased oil pressure at 2000 rpm, then I'd suggest an internally modified HV pump with a larger-than-typical pickup tube. On the other hand, if you simply want more peak pressure to coincide with your intended peak rpm then you may just shim the existing pump. Please note that the latter recommendation is not to necessarily imply that I think you need more than 60 psi for a 7500 rpm redline.

No, I didn't mean 75 lb at 2000, The ford spec was just for reference as to what you might expect as a starting point.

Yes, I did mean max at 7400/7500. I know that I only need 60 lb and my max was based on the old reference of 10 lb per 1000 rpm.

I want to fire it, on the dyno knowing that I will be able to reach at least 60 lb, to be able to rev it to the top rpm.

Thank you for your insight. Do you have the spring spec that your pumps use. The 302, is 10.6 - 12.2 @ 1.704. That way I'll have a better feel for choosing a spacer.

Buy a Melling Select 10688. Will have an adjustable pressure relief.

We use melling 10687 with supplied green spring , no extra spacer. This is a std volume pump and is all you need. 70 ish psi with 5-30 oil 200*, 7500 rpm. 30 psi at idle. slightly more bearing clearance than what you are running. This is for 289\302. Melling makes an equivilent for 351w if that is what you are running.

I am not sure what your application is but I know a 354 inch 302 with 11 to 1 compression and absolutely no restrictors in the oil system will live forever with 45lb oil pressure at 75 to 7700 RPM on a dirt circle track engine.

Thank you all.

This is a dyno mule, 306 application. ~7400 is the first build, to be upgraded to ~8000, by next year.

Bill, my pump is a std volume, does that green spring have a part number?

I know that I don't have to have 70+ psi, but, for my own piece of mind, I have to have at least 60 psi. I'd rather loose HP with more oil pressure than worry, even if 45 lb will do it.

I can understand that..

Melling use to make a standard volume high pressure pump M68A, have not used one for decades and Don't know if they are still available.

This sound like a good deal
Thanks BILL-C
