Stock Eliminator Manifold Question.......

I've always been a big fan of class racing and finally decided to jump into the mix. I built/assembled the engine on my own, and am very proud of how it runs. Problem is, I'm dependent on what mfg reps say or what I pick up at the track. So the learning curve will be slow and many theories, I'm guessing, wont pan out.

Anyway, I have been researching the intake manifold issue. Will a larger intake produce more power or torque with the minimal lift we have? My cam is .399 and revs very nicely. The more rpms I turn, the faster it runs. So far, Ive only been brave enough to take it to 7600, due to my shallow valve clearance. After the shift, it drops back to 5500, then pulls right back up again.

Any help is appreciated, I have any of the details you may need, except for dyno info. No respected ones are anywhere close to me......

What do you guys think?

I'm running the 283/220 pg combo. 3140 lbs, L/SA. 5.86 rear gear. Any thoughts on the intake manifold? Would it be better to use the alternate intake, which is the 327/300 intake? or is it too big?

Any ideas or thoughts?

Yes, use the alternate intake manifold. The guys that are running fast with that 283 combination, are running the allowed 327 intake.

Buy a good drag race carburetor and check into stagger jetting, there's power there. Longer runners get jetted larger, shorter runners get less jet. Ring seal is everything plus a trick set of heads. Look into classracer.com also

No one is mentioning the fall back? I feel you need converter help, pronto! It seems a 7" may be needed, but I am not a stocker genius.

That incorrectly placed in the books 327 intake on a 283 was only worth about a two-tenth ET reduction. That’s if you take a 327 intake off a junk engine.

TWO tenths ... in a Super Stock combination with just an intake manifold change???

300hp/327 CI 4-barrel intake/?

Is that the one year AFB intake.

I have one out in the garage I got from a boneyard years ago only because I noticed that it fit the AFB carb. (The four holes are bigger than any I had seen is all).

Never knew if it was any good or not, but still kept it.

No. It's the '65 327-250 4GC intake. The AFB was used on quite a few 327's through the years...not just a single year.

Like many things in Stock, NHRA should have never allowed that one as a replacement intake. But that list is long for lots of makes: FE Ford oil pans and intakes, '62-'67 Nova 283-327 oil pans, 426 Hemi 'NASCAR' single four engines, etc.

What's the deal with 62-67 Nova oil pans? Is the stock front sump an advantage or disadvantage?

Here's the Milodon rear sump pan thats accepted as a replacement for the early Chevy II front sump pan:

Now, you can do any sort of internal mods you want. I'm not against opening up the oil pan rule...matter of fact, I'm all for it. But if you're going to allow it for a couple of makes, it should be fair and opened up for everyone. This is another common sense, easily implemented rule that can actually save money in the long run, plus open up another area for experimentation.

The F.E. Intake manifold is just the copy of the 427 f.e that’s allowed on a 428 Cj and it was approved 30 years ago out of ford Motorsports catalog.

Not to mention the 428 CJ Holley that’s allowed on the 390. Or the PI intake the 390 also gets.
