The Pennsylvania 358 sprint car engine discussion

Post by houser45 »

I’ve never built one but I’ve been a little intrigued to know if anybody on here has built one or freshened one just Wanted to see some of the current and past trends on these engines were?

From my research it looks like the original ones were dry some ups roller cams with unported cylinder heads? Possibly 200 runner, but it looks now they can be fully ported.

Sounds similar to the Fremont, Ohio 360, no wing sprinters.

I believe it is the same as the “Ohio” sprints.

My brain is a little foggy, but if I remember right, first they were an unported head, then they allowed porting, but required a restrictive sized gasket between the head and manifold, then they went to a spec head.
All the classes, over the last 40 years, all seem to run together, so I could be way off.

1) What are the engine rules ? (would like to see rule book)

2) Wing or non-wing ?

3) Race track size ?

4) Corner entry and exit speeds ?

This is just for starters....

The dyno shop I use has done a few of these, they were carbed alky I believe. Power ran about 585-600 from what I was told.

Lincoln rules state in part :

"Cast iron heads of stock configuration mandatory. Stock OEM valve guide angle
(Example - GM 23 degree) plus or minus 1 degree. No raised intake runners or spread
port exhaust. No modification to push rod area on intake port. Milling of heads permitted."

What is the translation of "no modification to push rod area on intake port" ?

Inside the port like an ASCS Series cylinder head that had a go-no go gauge or outside the intake port so you can't make them .150" wider?

Don't you love the folks that write the rules?

My assumption is if they are allowing you to port the heads it means no brazing or epoxy work allowed to make it wider than the original casting would allow but we all know about assuming
